What am I doing wrong? (Graphics)

Please help! I'm pretty new to this photo-manipulation thing, you know taking two or more pictures and putting them together.

I've had GIMP for years and have manipulated photos for a very long time, though only recently have I started to take elements from different photos and make them one.

Problem is, I guess I'm doing something wrong, as the only comments I've received on them have been negative.

So could you possible tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm thick skin so don't worry about being too harsh. :)

I hate to give you a link to my deviantART profile and make you go all the way over there to see my images (only four, don't worry) but some of the models I've used had rules on only posting artwork on DA so...*shrug* I can post all but one here:)

^Too big to post here:)

And one last one...

I'm taking design courses at school, it doesn't make me an expert and also I work with making other things look good (other people's documentation and interweb pages) and have a decent eye for things:

Most of my nomenclature is going to come from the world of Photoshop as well, as I use it with regularity.

The background picture is nice, and the floral thing in the bottom left works well for its location and color.

The problems I have is the font used is difficult to read and the drop shadows and glow effects aren't both needed. If anything I'd stay with the glow effect or if you absolutely are in love with drop shadows, move it closer to the text. Also the quote attribute is tough to pick out from the sky, I'd either play with the blue value or consider a glow effect similar to the text and lose the drop shadow.

Upon looking at the floral thing closer it looks like a fight of the drop shadows and what layer you are on. It is an interesting focal point, the dots on the far left and the drop shadow effect leaves me kind of like I really want to push them closer together, and yet I like the semi ephermerealness of the rest of the design. I'm not sure what others will say, I like it in certain areas and others kind of leave me feeling "meh".

That should at least nudge you in a good direction. Your mileage may vary.
