Free words here: tips and tricks.
I wanted to start a post for tips a tricks people use to get better word counts. Here are a few of the one's I use:
1. loose hiphens (-). because things liek this: "I-knida-wanna-do-that-thing" only counts as one word. You may loose grammar points but you'll gain
words.
2. Add length to names. you cna edit them out latter. For example "Jane" becomes "Jane Marie Anderson" everytime she is mentioned. Presto extera words
everytime you type her name for any readon. Or in fantasy this works well: "Grindlos" becomes "Evile Lord Grindlos De Vorteger, owner of the seventh
stars" and walla! tons of extera words.
(Warning: #3 takes a lot of self controll and dissipline)
3. Reward system. I use jelly beans. Every 100 words I give myself a jelly bean. Then I restain myself from more by taling meself, "If you want more
type more!" It works great! I've pounded out 2,000+ words in like a hour with that system!
Ok 4, 5, 6, 7, etc are up to you. What awsome word adders do you use? PLEASE TELL!!!!
W.C.94
p.s. I HIGHLY recomend "No plot? No problem" by Chris Baty. It has a ton of great word adders that I don't have time to add to this. READ HIS BOOK.

Writing nonstop over one hour does wonders for your word count. I wrote two hours today and jumped up 4K.
Of course, even if you can't handle hour long wars, you should still war. I mean, Wars are where the words are at. Even 15 minutes a war gives you
awesome amounts at a time.
Also, because my character from Nano 06 is urging me, random acts are awesome for breaking writers block as well as adding words. I mean, adding
things like live chickens to the story means that you have a fresh thing to write about, but you also have to explain exactly how a chicken managed to
get into your character's house, car, spaceship... And pianos dropping from the sky? How does that happen? Why did it happen? What happens
afterwards?
Also, listen to your characters. Even if they really don't listen to you...

LOL! Pianos dropping from the sky... Yeah, that would make my story VERY interesting, especially since their in a spaceship...in outerspace... Maybe I'll do that. I've always loved falling/flying pianos. 0=)

-gets out a packet of teeth and lips- I'm going to try this... although now, I crave jelly beans. We don't have any in the house. ): Also, make
pointless lists to increase your wordcount. I've just done nearly a thousand words because I was listing all the kinds of food in a supermarket, since
they were in a supermarket. It works!

Write a idea.
Like, say you know you would like to have X happen at some point, but you're not sure when/how yet. Write it anyway, and a few other parts/versions.
Even if you don't use them, you'll get some great metaphors/imagery which you can then add elsewhere to boost your word count. Also usually acts as a
prompt for other ideas.

I use the rewards system, though I go with M&Ms, not jelly beans. It's only like 20 a day, so I dinnae think I'll get fat.
When I start getting bored, I make someone say something profound/mysterious or have something interesting happen (ZOMG HIGHWAY ROBBERS) and then
switch perspectives.
I have one secondary character who really helps me with word count, just because it's so fun to write about him.
Also, ACTION SEQUENCES! They keep things interesting. As soon as you've pitted your villain against the blind leader of the resistance and his dog,
you know things are about to get interesting...

OKay... I wrote this on another thread and retrieved it for this one
Some of these may already have been written, but hey... I'm too lazy to go check
First thing to remember though is not to beat yourself up over pointless words (unless it's hitting your head on the wall, I find that that actian
actually helps me on occasion) since they can be editted out at a later time. But you all knew that probably
Here goes:
1. Describe anything and everything
2. Have your characters have a pointless conversation
3. Throw another character in
4. Kill a character
5. Have dinner (not you, your characters... I find that describing food, people around a table, a table, and surrounding things such as the room can
give about 1k)
6. Eat chocolate (not this one IS for you. Chocolate can be substituted with candy Chocolate [for me] gets my brain on overdrive, very good for
writing)
7. Reward yourself for writing a certain amount.
8. Ask yourself "what can happen here?", answer this question, and then do it no matter how crazy
9. Take a ten minute break and then tie yourself down until you write so and so amount of words
10. Write something random
11. (this one works best for fantasy I think) throw in a battle, or maybe just a fight (I was wrong, a fight can go ANYWHERE after all)
12. Give a character a dream
13. Give a character a flashback
14. Have a character do something unexpected

Just throwing in my two cents which aren't completely relevant. This thread = great news. Seriously. If you find yourself needing words, try any/any
combination of these tips here. They work.
Especially the Word Wars.
I do find that the internet leads to major distractions, though. I use Q10, which is a full screen text editor, but I find myself CONSTANTLY
alt+tabbing my browser back up to check IMs and such. Close your browser, sign out of your IM services, etc. Have nothing up but your text editor of
choice. Seriously. You'd be surprised at how much more you write when you're not thinking about checking your e-mail and talking to buddies.
Even reward yourself. Write 500-1,000 words or whatever, then give yourself 10 or 15 minutes of chatting.
For me, as a dreaded nictotine addict, I use cigarettes as my reward system. Which is great for my health when I have writer's block, as I sometimes
go for hours without smoking.
Anyway, I'm rambling when I should be closing my browser and writing.

Borrow words from your short stories. After all, the JuNoWriMo FAQ only addresses reusing words from novels.

News achors talking. At least one report on what you're writing about. Let them jabber on.
Newspaper or internet articles. Make them up fo course, but gives you word count and you don't ahve to say much.
I've done both to add to word count, and it works in the novel. got the newspaper idea from another novel.
Have your character have a hobby that requires detailed information, someone who doesn't do that and reads your novel may want to know.
Throw in a new character. I write dialog easily and this helps with my word count.
[sorry for any typos, just typed a ton and my fingers and wrist are tired...]

I've quoted Pride and Prejudice several times because it's my character's (and my) favorite book. Considering the language back then was slightly more
flowery, one paragraph of dialogue can be about 100 words.
And maybe I'm the only one that didn't know this, but put a space after ellipses! I only realized a few days ago that it'll give you an extra word you
wouldn't have gotten otherwise. But that could've just been an epic, 4 year long blonde moment.

I've been writing some general things to keep going here are some ideas I had.
This shouldn't be replaced for writing, but can help with writers block, so when I have writers block to get that last 1k, then this may spur me on.
Or for AugNaNo. Or September Nano...
*names. Just a random list of names that pop into my head. I actually started with the letter A and worked my way through the alphabet (skipping
what I can't think of). First names then last names. These come in handy when I need a name of a friendly delivery person or one time friend.
*Tweets. I went through my tweets and wrote down some that I received ("desert cowboy cookout" sounded interesting )
*Random words written on other items. I would write down one word, look at something else, write down that word, look at something else, write down a
word from that. "Family Twists" sounded interesting to me...
*Random words of things. Just whatever the item was or the name of the item. Just words I heard on commercials. Last letter of the first word
became the first letter of the next word (for example, "mark" then "kiss"). Worked quickly through these lists.
*Seasonal words. My novel is taking place in the summer. So Ice cream and Beach party may come in handy when I need filler and have no clue what
else to write about. I just wrote down words, not plot ideas because I wasn't writing my novel, that can be in my novel for word count.
I should have been writing but I was blocked and this helped. Yesteday I filled in pages and did some today at lunch (had to get away from the
computer).

Best trick: The REPLACE function! Replace all contractions. They are faster to type, but then you go through and you get tons of words! I've just
added about 2,000 words to my document. And at this point I need all the extra words I can get. I am going to tackle my first JulNo and win it!
