How can I stay focused?

I already merged three stories successfully into the one I'm working on now. Then I saw the music video of Within Temptation's "What Have You Done." For some reason, I saw Keith Caputo's role and I thought "WEREWOLF!" And then I saw the woman whose name I forgot and thought "SADIST!" and then I thought "I WANT TO WRITE THAT STORY!" But I have never finished a novel and I WANT TO FINISH this one. I'm doing very well with JulNo, but how can I pacify the plot bunnies until August?

I may be a horrible person to take advice from on the subject, but I'd say write a brief synopsis of the story and put it away. Tell yourself that you CAN'T work on it until after you finish your first draft of your JulNo.

With any luck, your excitement about the new project will make the words crank out on your current one.

Sounds good on paper, right? Let's see if it backfires in practice.

EDIT: I just realized how pompously presumptuous I sounded, like I expected you to take my advice. Haha. My bad.

I often have issues like that as well. :embarrassed: However, I would write down your ideas, then keep working on JulNo. Maybe you'll be so anxious to write your next story that you'll finish July's early!! O.o

I feel bad for my characters...

I like this plan. Maybe if I get a good synopsis for the new story and a good first draft of the JulNo one this month, I can use this idea as a story for AugNo. :) Thanks!

Chase is right. That's what I usually do too, and it does help sometimes. Just be careful. During NaNo I got an idea and saved the idea one in a file labeled "After NaNo Project". When I left my writing-induced coma and was ready to write again, I was VERY confused by what I'd written.

I have this huge notebook that has a whole page dedicated to a new story idea :] I clip out pictures from magazines and giant words and I make the title out of the letters I clip (this always happens during WriMos doesn't it? It's the creative juice curse). I find this method a good way to get my eyes off of the computer for a bit to give them a break AND I get my ideas all ready for another novel. By the time I finish my project, I want to go back to writing again and I usually can't wait until the end of the month (which is when I can open up the notebook and look at what my inspiration's given to me!

Gah.
I kind of have the opposite of your problem:
I joined today, on the 12th of July, on a whim.
I'm worried.

Don't be. Just plug away at your story. And if you get behind *cough cough*like me*cough*, just write more the next day. I think given when you started, you'll have to do about 2800 words a day to get done. But that's what I have to do to catch up now anyway. It's not that hard if you can focus on it.

I joined on 5th July and considering it's only 9:47 in the morning here, I'm going pretty good. I plan to write 3000 words today, since yesterday I wrote about that many.

And Teeny, that idea sounds excellent. I'm most definitely going to try that. (:

Get the shape of the story out of your head ,, I find pen and paper best for this job, have them next to you while typing on the puter, if you get an idea jot it down keeping it short and neat, it will help you focus on the one your woking on by removing the tempation to change parts of what your working on cause of this awesome new character you thought about for the next just has to be used now
