Community Story (meta discussion)

Who remembers those stories you sometimes had to write in school where you wrote a paragraph, then passed the paper to the person behind you, who added another paragraph, and so on? I thought that they were fun and it taxes your imagination to try to think of something which fits in with what has already happened.

I'd like to propose a thread which is sort of like this multi-writer story. When you're feeling stuck with your own writing, you can contribute a paragraph to the ongoing story. Perhaps thinking about a different plot will help you with your own writing, especially if you're of the non-plotting persuasion. Since this is JulNoWriMo, and you're entitled to work on different projects, you can even count the words you contribute towards your total! Perhaps we'll even end up with another 50,000 word story from the community story.

The rules:
  • The story is posted in another thread, entitled Community Story/Round Robin. Discussions about the concept and the story should be posted in this thread, 'Community Story (meta discussion).'
  • By posting in the 'Community Story' thread you agree that what you post there is creative commons licensed (this basically means that anyone can take the complete story, and modify it, but they must credit everyone who participated). This is so that anyone who wants to can incorporate material into her/his own writing.
  • Please try to keep continuity. It's fine to throw in a monkey wrench--for example adding a zombie to what has previously been a historic romance--but try not to change the any facts which have previously been asserted (such as the sex of a character). Since you'll be working from what you remember about the story rather than keeping a careful list of everything that's happened, there will be continuity errors but please don't deliberately introduce them.
  • Don't add anything too graphic--I'd like for writers of all ages to be able to participate.
  • When you plan to add to the thread, make a post with the words 'IN PROGRESS'. Then go back and edit it to add your content. To keep the thread from getting blocked, if you see an 'IN PROGRESS' post which is more than one hour old, disregard it and make your own 'IN PROGRESS' post.
  • At the bottom of the post, please include the cumulative wordcount.

That's all I can think of. The idea is to have fun, and end up with something crazy and probably completely beyond hope (although who knows--we may end up with something beautiful!).

I always wanted to write a story like that, rather than a paragraph at a time, it'd be a chapter. Each person would back a character or several into a corner and it was up to the next author to write them out of the jam and then create a new problem to be solved by the next person.

One book that I thought was a cute foray into that system was "The Red Tape War" which introduced me to the concept, and I could never find people to do that with.

Unfortunately, I got classes, my own JulNoWriMo project going on, a full time job, and such, as I never thought of trying to do that with this group.

I suggest a paragraph because that's really easy to sneak in with your own writing (although people are welcome to post more or less than a paragraph, of course), but I can see how the result might well be higher quality if it's done on a per-chapter basis.

That's something I would be willing to try another time when I don't have a specific project in mind (this July I'll be working on my thesis, so my intention was that this thread would serve as a fun fiction release when I've had enough serious writing). I'm also interested in the idea of several people coming up with a rough plot together and then each person writing a story independently using the same plot.

Oh of course a paragraph makes sense, but I love the problem resolution and problem set up approach as that kind of really fuels my engine.

The only problem with a public forum like this is that some people with slower interwebs or slow typers in general, might work on the next great paragraph and get "sniped" by someone cruising through banging out something quick and shooting off to their own thing... Kind of have to set up some ground rules or a specific rotation.

I'd love to contribute. (When done chapter-by-chapter it would be kind of like what's being done in the Potato Moon project, wouldn't it? Just an example.)

Me and my friend do this in class instead of taking notes. Which would probably explain part of my grade. We normally start with, half a sentence at a time, then it gets up to a paragraph. We're kind of mean to each other in which we try and ruin the other person's plot.

I am not familiar with the Potato Moon project. What is it? When I search for it I find something about music.

With this someone is welcome to write any length at all (including a chapter!) but I don't want to distract people too much from their real projects by making it a requirement; that's why I suggested a paragraph. I imagine that people may well write more (especially with dialogue--paragraphs can be quite short then!).

Potato Moon is a (quite awesome) parody of Twilight. Count me in for this.

Good cover for having people post "In progress"... And as such, I added another 186 words, trying to make sure I followed the story you've laid out. (Trying to keep in a first person narrative while sitting at a table across from Olivia, a supposed cat-like woman).

Awesome beginning

hehe... yeah, good cover none-the-less. I couldn't think of a good way to handle it.

Well, that's the nice thing about this...everyone has their own interpretation and carries the story on, which means that if you go back to it it has not gone as you were thinking it might when you added your own piece. I was just thinking of one of those ridiculously long fake fingernails painted in a vivid pattern, and now I see that it turns out she's wearing a complete Halloween costume.

I was thinking this length with this design, but perhaps 'talon' conjures this image?

Just added a short bit to it.

I have to say, I'm loving the story so far. Olivia definitely seems to be one of the most eccentric characters, by far. I love her :D A bit psychotic, though :X

Haha. The title Taming Olivia comes to mind when I read what we have so far.

My brain wandered off and brainstormed last night, and I somehow saw Father Lappin murdering to keep his good name with the church. Ironic and gory. Score.
