Music to Write To

I was just wondering what sort of music you like to have on in the background while you're writing.

Mine varies depending on the scene, but in general I try to listen to music that's not totally going to distract me from the actual writing (like stuff that I can't help but sing to, and when that happens, I end up writing the words I'm singing instead of the words of the story  ).

I end up with a lot of instrumental music, in large part soundtracks from various movies. James Horner (Capser, Titanic), John Williams (Memoirs of a Geisha, Star Wars), Thomas Newman (Finding Nemo, Jarhead), Hans Zimmer (The Da Vinci Code, Black Hawk Down), Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings), Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles, Lost)

One of my favorites is the Batman Begins soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, because there's such a range of emotions in it, from determination to sorrow. Moulin Rouge is a good one for writing relationship scenes.

And similarly, would anyone be interested in sharing good writing music? I have a list of music here that I'd be willing to upload on request...

Generally if I'm listening to music while writing, the writing comes from the music. Because of that I listen to pretty much anything when I write.

If I'm already writing and I turn the music on, its normally soft, and like obi1sgirl instrumental rather than lyrical.

If I at yet another road block, I'll write song lyrics in order to jog my thoughts. Song titles/lines can come in handy as thought starters

I love listening to the soundtrack for Lost while I write, or from The Lord of the Rings. Bagpipes are good, too.

I usually don't like to listen to anything at all when I write. It totally distracts me. Though, I do sometimes listen to the Harry Potter soundtrack from the first movie, or the Davy Crockett song.

Yeah, that may sound odd. But one of my favorite authors used to have that song on his web site, I don't feel like explaining why he did lol, but basically it gets me motivated somehow.

The best ideas always seem to nibble at my brain when I'm trying to sleep. It's not too unusual for me to be sitting up in bed, with the covers pulled up, writing desperately on a notepad. A bedside lamp and a clock reading about 2:00 light up the room. Music is left off for fear that it will take me out of that creative zone.
Normally, I don't listen to music because I find the commercials annoying and distracting. I've recently discovered the uninterrupted music stations on my satellite tv. I think I'll try listening to music during the daytime.

Ugh, I hate radio because of the commericals (and, you know, the lack of music I like to listen to). I don't even play it in my car, just CDs. ^^

i like to write a lot of fanfiction because, well... it's easier, provided you're insanely familiar with the fandom, and i'm always looking for something easy and fun...

with that said - if i'm working on harry potter fanfics, i listen to any of the soundtracks, or the band Harry and the Potters, because they're awesome. if i'm writing a band-centered piece, i listen to any / all of their albums... so forth and so on.

last july, i listened to only backstreet boys while writing a piece centered in a gothic / vampiric cult community... and it actually worked wonders for my muse, believe it or not. generally, i just have my itunes playing quietly in the background while i write... or my brother playing video games loudly right next to me. haha.

i really am the epitome of college student - i can get down to work in any situation you throw at me!

[btw, feel free to point and laugh at me now that you know i listen to bsb, :P]

I've just borrowed the Return of the King soundtrack, and have fallen in love with Into the West. And it helped me write :D. Your posts made me go and find it. Thanks.

If you really liked RotK and Into the West, you might enjoy "Gollum's Song" from The Two Towers... plus the rest of the soundtracks. Like I said, I'm willing to share. ;)

Ah, Gollum's Song. It's actually connected with a very . . . unfortunate and turmoil-filled two weeks of my life, so I only listen to it when I'm in a certain mood. :) But I do adore the Lord of the Rings soundtracks. I have all three on an iTunes playlist, and I find them good for when I have trouble concentrating. The only minor issue I have with them, though, is the variation in volume level. Take the RotK transition between "The Steward of Gondor" and "Minas Morgul." O.o

Lately, I've been getting into the instrumental Lifescapes CDs, available at Target. I have "Scottish Moors," "Emerald Isle," "Beethoven's Moonlight," and "Celtic Flutes." They're so relaxing, and "Celtic Flutes" is now the soundtrack for my main fantasy project.

If I'm "in the zone," though, I can listen to anything, from The Beatles to Will Smith to Frank Sinatra to Queen to Norah Jones. Train, Yellowcard, Chris Daughtry . . . Oh, and Josh Groban. Give me Josh anytime. I find that the music I listen to serves to keep me focused, rather than affect what it is I'm writing.

It depends on my mood and what I'm writing really. Generally, I listen to the Sisters of Mercy and the Mission UK because I am so comfortably familiar with them that they entertain me while I can tune them out to the level of being white noise - if that makes sense.

Others times it's Andrea Bocelli and movie soundtracks. Juno Reactor is good, too.

I've just remembered what else I usually write too...

Evanescene - Fallen and Anywhere but Home
Nickelback - All the Right Reasons (unfortunately I just sing along alot of the time, but it's got a good range of emotions)
Michael Buble - His first album (title escapes me) and a few other songs

i love finding little bands that no one knows and keeping them to myself; it's a nice little secret... 'til they get big... but that usually just means i get to see them around more [kinda like harry & the potters]!

Soundtracks are awesome to write to. My particular soundtrack vice is video game soundtracks of the 32-bit and up vareity (PlayStation onward). Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross and the like, plus remixes such as those found on http://www.ocremix.org/ .

At the moment I'm having a breathtakingly complicated computer/iPod/music issue which means that all I have in terms of music on my current computer is four days worth of They Might Be Giants songs, 'State Songs' by John Linnell, 'Fortunate Son' covered by Wyclef Jean, and the end titles to 'I, Robot' by Marco Beltrami. This is just a transitional thing, but it's all I get to write to right now.

It's really interesting having this unintentional limitation on the background music, because it's noticeably affecting my writing style. I had no real concept of just how much those omnipresent rhythmic and lyrical patterns modify my creative process until now. I'm considering continuing with this experiment even once I've got the technical snafu sorted and have more choice in my auditory environment.

I haven't been exposed to too much video game music, though a friend at Lj sent me a few tracks from Halo 2, and I was intrigued. I'm not a gamer, so I'd never really thought of the music and that it could be so good.
