Help! Anybody know Xhosa?

I'm working with a language similar to Xhosa with lots of clicks and taps because the area in which it is set is a desert with severe winds and dust storms and no one wants a mouth full of dust.

I'm trying to come up with a way of indicating these sounds so that when MC shows up in a country where the language is almost entirely made up of vowels and liquids (Think Hawaiian), it can be indicated that he is speaking, but no one can understand him (since he is one of the narrators, the readers will understand when he is POV character).

I don't want to do a Hemingway where the only way the reader realizes that a language is not understood by a character is by that character asking another what was said.

Any ideas?
