Which one should I kill?

Carrie is a nineteen year old student who is brilliant! She's great fun and has never been happier than when with Carrie, even though simultaniously, she's never felt so sad and so guilty

Alex is a twenty something, absolutely beautiful and brilliant student (she got bored of her previous career, so changed it, again). She's married to Peter, her childhood romance, and they make a really nice couple. But then she falls in love with Carrie.

One of them is going to die, but I can't decide which one. So you can make the decision for me :D

Alex. I don't know why, but when a character is described as beautiful and brilliant, I start to dislike them. :P

Although in defense of the "kill Peter" option, it WOULD be dramatic. Alex would be devastated; even though, sure, she's having an affair with Carrie, Peter was her husband and childhood romance. They're probably really good friends, if not best friends. If he dies, Alex could start wondering what would have happened had she stayed with him... would he still be dead?

Which could lead to her (unintentionally?) shunning Carrie in her grief, which could lead to relationship drama. Carrie, being so young, might not truly understand... and all she wants is her lover back, whereas all Alex wants is her husband back; even if she has Carrie, she'd have been through so much with Peter. It wouldn't have to be that she wanted to break it off with Carrie. It'd be that she wished that Peter wasn't dead.

If that made sense.

Then again, if Carrie died, Alex would also be up to her knees. Her lover would be dead, and she would be dealing with her grief while, at the same time, trying to sort things out with her husband, who she cheated on. They could divorce, which could potentially be very messy, or they could try to work things out - which would be full of drama because Alex would still be very upset about Carrie's death, and there would be trust issues between Peter and her.

THEN AGAIN Alex herself could die.

Assuming that both Carrie and Alex would want to go to her funeral, they'd probably meet. And even if Peter didn't know that his wife and Carrie had an affair, Carrie would probably know Alex's husband when she saw him. Which would be awkward. And if Peter knew who Carrie was, it would be even more awkward; he'd have to put up with being in the same room as his dead wife's lover for the sake of his love for said dead wife, whose funeral he is attending. And all he'd want to do is just confront Carrie; and even if he didn't want to confront her, there's always the potential for an awkward conversation in which they both know who the other is but refuse to acknowledge it.

Taking in mind that I really don't know anything about your novel besides the brief descriptions of the characters that you gave us, soo...

Yeah, I have too much time on my hands. And really I probably only made it more difficult for you.

If it helps, I vote that Peter dies. If that doesn't help, I vote Carrie.
(Bonus angst: "she hadn't even had her twentieth birthday yetttt! *bursts into tears*")

O.o wow, that's the most detailed response yet. And pretty much everything I thought of. For the story it would be much more effective and much more dramatic for Alex to die, but I like Alex, and I like writing her better than Carrie, plus I like the idea of Carrie dying, and Alex not being able to openly mourn for her. Then again if Alex dies Carrie and Peter have to meet at some point, which should be interesting to write.

This is why I don't want to choose :(

If you don't want to choose, then no one dies. Why is it a must? As I said to Daltanimal, you want to milk a death to the max. Yeah, it's cool to use it to make awkward feelings between others, but I think it works better when the reader has grown to love the character, though the character is not the MC. Then the reader can truly understand the MC's grief.

You'll get enough drama if you keep them all alive. Here's a thought. Peter's grandmother is dying and he needs to fly across the country to see her. But Carrie finds herself pretending to be really sick, so she can't go. She sends her husband off by himself. Somehow, Alex happens to visit, and, well, Peter's away. A couple days later, though, Carrie and Alex are having a day to themselves in Carrie's bed and Peter comes home unannounced. Now we can send Carrie on a guilt trip for not only deserting her husband when he needed her but then going on to have an affair behind his back. You can add a relationship between Alex and Peter to screw things up even more. Perhaps he's her boss? ( Don't use that, you can come up with much better. It's just an example. )

Don't kill. Play the three of them against each other. Plus, with a death, there's a lot of dwelling in the past. Good stories happen in the here and now. Not many people care what happened to your character yesterday. They're more worried about what's happening now, and what may or may not happen in the future. ;)

...and he can do that, and she can do this, and he can react like that, and she can slap him, and he can yell at her, and then a dead body can come crashing through the ceiling... yippee! XD

Just in case anyone cares, I killed Carrie. :crying:
Alex decided to leave her husband but before she got the courage to tell him Carrie dies. She then keeps her relationship with Carrie a secret and on the day of the funeral she discovers that she's pregnant, and therefore she decides that even though she feels like it, she has to stay with Peter blah blah blah....

I have no originality, this is a soap writers handbook :-/

She was a bit ill and had kind of low blood pressure, which meant that she was more likely to faint for no reason. She lost conciousness whilst driving. I know, it sucks :(

Aww, you can't kill a character while s/he's alone--there's nobody to be horribly traumatized and scarred for life by the fact that s/he couldn't save the deceased! Plus, you gotta learn to kill your characters with style. Going gently into that good night is no fun at all. :P

:P Well I warned you that it sucks :P
Plus there's lots of guilt there, Alex knew that she shouldn't really be driving and she could have saved her if she hadn't been late. She saw the crash, does that help?

It's not like this novel is ever going to see the light of day anyhow, it's allowed to be rubbish.

I would say that no novel with 46 sex scenes could possibly be rubbish, except I've read Laurell K. Hamilton. So I will say that no novel with 20 femslash scenes could possibly be rubbish. ;)

Aw, so I just found the thread and started reading it ... and decided I'd like to see Alex die and then found out that you'd already killed Carrie.

I would have chosen Alex because it would have been harder on Peter (as someone mentioned above) and if you're going to kill someone off in a story you should do it for maximim impact on all your characrers (unless you're Paul Auster, but don't be him he's boring). Also by killing Alex you destroy the love triangle by getting rid of the connecting person not "the other woman" who wasn't in the equation to begin with.

Sorry, killing Alex would have had an awesome impact and would have been amazing to write, and if I were ever to re-write it as a play (for which I think it would be perfect) Alex would probably die.
BUT...
I like her character more :embarrassed: It's a naff reason I know, but still, my novel!!
