Emergency help required. [Sorted, now off topic :D]

I'm having real difficulty writing. Yeah, I've got some idea on what to write, but I just really can't be bothered (well, a serious lack of motivation, at least). I want to do it and get the 50k words, but I really don't feel like writing anything at all.

I've tried things to motivate me and things, but I always end up going on games or something. The playstation is now a major distraction.

Anybody got any tips or advice for this last section?

I have 38289 words ish and I think I could do it, but I need motiviation. I only seem to be able to write at night, probably because I'm bored of everything else for that day. At first the writing was fun, but now it seems to have lost it's shine.

How can I make it fun again?

Thanks.
Giltrap.

== Added info ==
I've not actually written any fictional stuff whatsoever since maybe 3 years ago? and that was at junior school, and that was awful. It's great I've got this far actually, but completing it would be ultimate win.

By the way, my general theme thingy is randomest thing ever, so if you have some random suggestions similar to what you find in the dares thread, they are appreciated.

Giltrap, I'm a long way behind you but I'm just being slow.

Couple of things that might help you - focus on the fact that you only have 12K to go! If you stand on a chair you'll see the finish line, and think how good that's going to feel.

If you're not sure where to go with it, try for a fresh sub-plot or a fresh flash-back or prequel.

Or think back over it and find one of those places where you weren't sure which direction to go, and go back there and try the other direction. You can choose what to discard later when you edit.

Fresh is the key word. If you can come up with what Jessie called a 'new shiny idea' for a sub-plot / flashback / prequel you'll be flying again.

11k left now!

I had a sudden inspiration to go grab some CDs out the car (not my car, too young to drive). I felt like listening to Ian Dury and the Blockheads and some of their brillant tunes. Hit Me With Your Rythm Stick =D

It made me write 900 words rather fast anyway, so that's good.

My major problem is that I have got to the end of what I planned, and where exactly does one when go when one has taken over the world and are now an ambassador for earth in an intergalactic community?

I'll come up with something awesome. Awesome and random is my theme.

Thanks. The 12k thing helped, and I am thinking of a new shiny idea.

O.o NEW IDEA! Something about lions, and someone yelling "HOLY CRAP, ITS A LION! GET IN THE CAR!" This will be good.

Giltrap, you stick in there. Watercolour has given you good advice. The whole idea of these challenges is to motivate. Just think your games and playstation will still be there when you have finished your story.
I've always just 'talked' about writing, but never did, until I discovered these sites that offer challenges, and help from others to cheer you along.
I have just finished SocNoc 50,000, (June) and this challenge JulNoWriMo 50,000 (July) and tonight a 2,000 challenge for this weekend. Still have to edit it.
It doesn't matter too much what you write about at this stage, just get that word total up there, you can rewrite when you edit it later. :)

Remember, don\'t put off what you should do today, for it will be yesterday, tomorrow!

Keep it up, Giltrap! The hardest part is starting. Try setting a timer for ten or fifteen minutes and see how many words you can get done. Just keep going and the words will come.
*pokes own wordcount* Maybe I should take my own advice... :P

New tactic: Write for a bit, then do a race or something on playstation, faff for a few mins thinking of what to write. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It seems to be working.

The thing is, I get angry when I keep failing badly at my games, so I go back to the PC and attack the keyboard with my words. Ooo... Attack the keyboard with words. I might have to include that if someone ever has to write something in what I'm writing.

Inspiration!

Faffing is great :D The thing I've learned here is that faffing is much more fun when it's a treat rather than the main course!

Faffing! I've never heard it before, but I like that word. And yes, I'll agree, I do quite a bit of that myself. I get the best random ideas when I'm wasting time not doing much of anything. :)

I find that when I'm on my fourty-five minute ride to work (Mom drives), my noveling seems to go uphill. Meaning that, I probably write two hundred words in the first twenty minutes, but by the end of the drive, I'm up to one thousand. Just saying that, at least for me, it's not where you dive headlong and then start fading away, it's like getting into a pool: you wade in, slowly get used to the water, and soon you're swimming like a fish. Get in the water, and get those last few words! (And they are few, no matter how big they seem, you've done much more in the previous weeks.)

...and he can do that, and she can do this, and he can react like that, and she can slap him, and he can yell at her, and then a dead body can come crashing through the ceiling... yippee! XD

I am now faffing too much... and I also need some new plot direction, and I've backed myself into a corner.

Having your guy take over the world before you get to 40k sort of messes things up... I need something creative.

BINGO! He can be abducted by evil aliens. :D

This is getting increasingly more absurd.

As long as you keep writing, absurd is perfectly fine. You're so close to being done - don't stop now! Even if I have no idea what I'm going to write, sometimes I'll sit down anyway and force myself to write a few paragraphs and then usually I come up with something and then that something will trigger other ideas and then I'm all right for another few thousand words until I get stuck again. Good luck!

Is a deckchair with a confused look on its face absurd enough?
It took up 61 words, so I guess it is good 8-)

Actually, it isn't getting more absurd. It started off with the MC talking to the ceiling. Maybe my mind is absurd. However, it is fun.

Back to absurdity I go!

(You're still helping brilliantly by the way, even slightly off topic stuff about faffing is helping. Gives me a quick break from writings to think of more absurd stuff)

Being absurd is fine, especially when this close to the end of the competition. I remember in NaNoWriMo 2004, I was stuck on what to write, so I took a dare and used it. I think I wrote a few hundred words on my character baking a cake... *shrug*

You can't have one guy take over the world. Imagine living in that situation, under such a system, people would have to abide by his instruction totally.
You need to have the people rebel to this situation, reject him, they will want their freedom. Isn't that what democracy is about?
Why have you got a guy taking over the world? In my country, in New Zealand we have a woman. :-*

I've used a few dares, but carried them out lousily. I sort of only really had the characters mention it or say somethign about them to themselves. I did however have a full blown cake fight that took up a whole chapter :D

I originally started with the idea that the main character would be a guy, who then went out and did *something.* That something just happened to be take over the world. The entire organisation he runs is entirely made up of guys, but that's probably because the 2 organisations that made his organisation were called the Bobs and the Steves. That explains why really.

The people don't seem to want to rebel because somehow he managed to improve the world drastically. He used absoloute power to the worlds advantage, basically organising a huge taskforce to get awesome things done. He's a nice guy who's taken over the world, which is different.

It's complicated, insane, and I made it. Me making it explains the first 2.

I better stop writing here and get back to writing. 400 words on top of my usual ammount and I'll have caught up.

Google Docs, it's what I was writing on.

Now I've got to work out how to get it on PDF properly, as it only seems to do half my stuff. Copy and paste works good for .txt documents. I'll PDF a .txt I suppose.

Google is god if you didn't know http://www.thechurchofgoogle.org/

Our Google, who art in cyberspace,
Hallowed be thy domain.
Thy search to come,
Thy results be done,
On 127.0.0.1 as it is in the Googleplex.
Give us this day our daily searches,
And forgive us our spam,
As we forgive those who spam against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from Microsoft.
For thine is the search engine,
And the power,
And the glory,
Forever and ever.
Amen.
