The Great American Road Trip Novel

So actually I decided to work on another WIP primarily for JulNo...and if I finish/get stuck on that one I'll work on this but I'm going to save it for later, I think. Yeah. So I'm making another progress report thread for the one I'm actually doing...yeah.

AKA I'm not going on a road trip this summer so I'm going to write about one :P

The working title of my JulNo is The Great American Road Trip Novel (with tongue firmly inserted in cheek) and the tagline is: 3 months. 2 friends. 1 quest.

Basically I'm writing about two best friends who go on a road trip the summer after they've graduated high school. Nick is from a magical family and he's supposed to go on a solo quest to find his inspiration before he goes off to magic college, but he can't drive so his best friend Amanda, who he's been in love with for years, has to drive him. Hilarity (hopefully) ensues.

I wanted to take a break from the intensely plotted novel I'm currently working on, so I'm going to print out a map of the continental US and point to it randomly to decide where they go. To decide what happens in each place, I'll make a numbered list of things I want to happen and roll a die to see what will happen at each place they visit. Suggestions of crazy stuff they can do will be greatly appreciated, send me a message or comment if you have any!

Basically since I'm doing kind of a weird way to plot this as I go I thought it'd be fun to have a Progress Report. I'll probably just be putting up each new place they go to and what they're going to do there. So...yeah :)

That's an awesome way to plot a novel, Rowena. It sounds like you've got a fun, if a bit mad, July ahead of you. :D

Thanks! Let's just hope it turns out somewhat alright and not a complete mess :P I really should be doing some more intense character development before I start, hopefully that will help too.

Random thought. In a book I (accidentally) began writing a couple weeks ago, one of the character's names is Rowena. But I chose to go with the older spelling and pronunciation, Rhonwen.

ANYWAY! Good luck! Can't wait to see the way it turns out.

@marie - thanks! :)

@cheyenne - I didn't know that was the older spelling - it was my character's name in a musical I was in around when I started actually doing online forum things, so I adopted it :) And thanks!

Update: So as those of you who frequent the Procrastination Black Hole thread know, I'm working two jobs this summer, and one of them is retail, and it's kind of killing my soul (I'm not cut out for this) and yesterday, I was in such a bad mood that I decided to start writing GARTN during my lunch to cheer myself up. So I'm kinda going back on my whole use-GARTN-as-a-reward-for-finishing-my-other-WIP thing because I really have no energy or creativity for Beyond the Walls right now but I really need words and to cheer myself up.

So I've now written almost 5k of GARTN in one day. I finished the prologue, which I started yesterday, and also finished chapter 1. Nick has suddenly grown three siblings, including a sister named Cassidy who he is actually really close to. Amanda now has a younger brother named Patrick, two really supportive parents, and a last name. I'm about to start chapter 2, which concludes the introduction of Nick's family, and will hopefully explain the fantastical element of the story a bit more. (I've decided that they are warlocks. Why? I'm not sure. It sounded cool.) Then I guess chapter 3 will actually start the road trip portion of the novel.
