Need to Catch Up, Quick...

Okay, I'm on 35,109 words at the minute, but I have to finish by Friday, which gives me three (already very busy) days to get there.

Has anyone got any tips for writing anything (even crap) quickly?

I'm behind because I was ill, and then didn't have a computer to use 'til this morning.

Well this isn't a tip, but you have about 5k words to do per day. (Good luck)

I suggest taking it 1k at a time and having breaks in between so you won't burn out.

5k per day isn't that bad if you are dedicated. In the past three days, I've had two days of 4.5k that weren't so bad at all. But then again, in the past three days I have had an epiphany about the direction of my story :)

What I recommend is that you change the plot direction to something you are comfortable with writing. In my story, I was focusing on these stupid relationships with the MC's old friends, but then I spent a chapter shifting the main focus to underground organizations and conspiracies! I would much rather write about conspiracies and all that fun stuff, and I can still fill in the details about the old friends when I feel like it.

If you don't like the plot area you're in now, find a logical way for it to shift drastically. Then, start writing what you know about, revisiting the old areas a little later once you've killed a bunch of words and are comfortable. But needing to write 15k when you've dug yourself into a pit of death is just going to stress you out... writing 15k about interesting things that you haven't already wrote 35k about ...

If you're really stuck, maybe you can work on something else instead!

I agree with rob about taking your plot in a new direction. I always lose steam near the end of challenges like this because the plot is becoming stale - maybe something new will make you excited and the words will pour out a little easier.

I got so excited with my last chapter, I nearly forgot about all the things I've left behind. Now I have to go back and settle all the things I started in the first four chapters of the book; then I can come back to the good stuff. If my writing works out, though, I'll hopefully be able to mix the two together. They are indeed related, but the first story arc is more personal (and thus more boring to me).

Oh well, my time to start writing is approaching oh so fast! *hides*

Well, I'm sat down with a big chilled bottle of lemonade and no distractions... well, not many.

So, here goes three hours.

Wish me luck.

(I've got no other time, really - so much to do...)

Sit down, and get rid of clocks. Don't look at your word count either. Seriously. Take a good look at what you've written, and find the story in it. Make your writing just like your reading. After all, that's what you're doing. You're reading a good book. It just happens to be a book that you are the first person ever to read. In the words of Stephen King, writing a book is like uncovering a fossil. It's already intact, it's just your job to get it out of the ground. If you need to, meditate for a while to get all the bugging thoughts out of your mind. For the next day, if you still have that (sorry on being so late), nothing else exists besides you and your story. Okay? Get writing.

...and he can do that, and she can do this, and he can react like that, and she can slap him, and he can yell at her, and then a dead body can come crashing through the ceiling... yippee! XD

Haha. I'll do it this evening - not got time before. Then I go onto paper, through the night.
