Noooooo!

I was in the middle of my novel, written some fantastic bits, in full flow, just about to his the save button and

PUFF

Electricity gone.

There is some building work going on, a new Sainsbury's being built. Knocked out all electricity. And my laptop wasn't charged (I was using desk top)

So not only did I lose some awesome writing (no matter how mad that writing was, because I lost it I will always think of it as awesome) but I then had to wonder into town, buy some drinks at Costa and now I'm sitting in Costa wondering how do I get back into that Zone.

Oh woe us modern writers.

If you were using Word (or OO Writer) a lot of what you wrote will still be there in the backup file, so you might be able to restore it next time you start.

If you can't, thought... well, it's like a fishing yarn, isn't it? The words that got away are always the best ones and you just keep going back to the same fishing hole over and over again trying to hook the big one again.

(Mixed metaphors, anyone?)

Losing work is the worst but you're doing well with your word count, if that's any comfort. Good luck.

What a pain! How much did you lose?

I save every few paragraphs (using the Ctrl+S macro) to avoid this. I would advise everyone save often to make sure this doesn't happen to them too.

I usually do. I don't know why I didn't this time. I usually save every 15 minutes.

I lost about 2000 words, but I've written them again, and actually I think it's better than it originally was.

The lost words wasn't really the problem. It was the lack of any way to keep writing save going down town (seeings as my laptop had no battery) so I lost my flow.

Google docs is really good to write on for this reason. It saves every few seconds, and you can use it in both on and offline mode. And because its connected to the internet you almost NEVER lose writing.
