Manchester/UK

Hello,
My story is set in Manchester and I'm trying to find out things about it. And sometimes I get stuck.

For example; I've figured that there is a 3 month Travel Card for students. How does this work when you get into the Public Transport? Do you need to show it or do you need to place it some sort of scanner?

I'm not actually a student in Manchester but I'm a student from fifty miles away from Manchester who goes quite often. I think you'd show it - I'm not sure I've ever seen a scanner on the bus, tram or train. So you'd show the bus driver, but for the other methods you'd just get on and show the inspector if you see one.

Okay thank you!
Here in the Netherlands we use scanners (and tickets for those who do not (wish or can) use the so called OV-chipcards). and I feel that it's kinda stupid to pretend that the customs of the Netherlands apply to the UK as well.
