Post-JulNo Novel Swaps

This was always something fun I did with my NaNo Newbies in the past, but thought it could be fun to bring to the adult-area of the JulNo forums as well.

It's pretty simple. You're writing a novel in July, right? Well, once July is done... You have two weeks to put the finishing touches on it and then email it in its mostly uneditted glory over to your swap partner. Minimal editing required -- with them, we decided that you could run a spell check and then remove any random notes you left for yourself inside the manuscript -- but nothing more than that.

The idea is to get that initial feedback on what is / isn't working for readers AND to make you feel better in seeing that other people's zero drafts during WriMos aren't terrible, but they also aren't brilliant. Makes you hate yourself less in the long run.

Anyone else interested in doing this? We could do it randomly, even. Match people up by final novel word count and then exchange U2Us containing emails?

[I did put this in the adult forum on purpose. Which sounds snotty, but I know most 25+ don't really want to read about the same topics / character groupings that the 13-16 crowd are interested. Teens -- feel free to steal this post and create your own swap, though!]

I would count that as minimal editing. The idea is just not to go through and fix plot holes / characterization flubs / mistakes right away.

This sounds awesome! However, as a college student, I'm still caught in that awkward stage between being a teenager and being an adult. And, since I'm writing a YA fiction story, I might have to steal this for the Teen forum if no one else has already.

I hated that period of life. I never knew which side to go with. For this, I would say go by your intended audience age. 18+ = adult, 17 and under teen? Does that seem like a fair way to split this in half?

Like I said, don't want to exclude anyone, but I can't imagine how I would react at 13 if I were paired up with myself now. Definitely different subject matters. xD

So, I wouldn't want to be paired with you? anyway I retract my statement it's a children's book, it seems like a children's book until you get to the part with death and what not.

SianaBlackwood: Whichever you'd like, or both, if you'd be willing to read two other people's novels. Otherwise, I would pick the one I wanted the most commentary from fresh eyes on, personally. I know everyone's criteria for picking would be different [ie -- some would go with the one that they feel is written better, some would pick the one that is worse, some would pick the one that would be most "accepted" as "normal," etc.] But that's up to you!

Does the novel have to be completed by then, or can I send it in in all its unfinished, unedited glory? (I'm going to try and complete it, but squeezing a 100K novel into a 50K challenge is a little...scary?)

Because if that's alright, then I'm down, if you don't mind a 20 year old joining in. ^^

The novels do need to be more or less finished to participate. You have a little extra time after JulNo [2-3 weeks] to keep adding to it. And if the ending isn't as fleshed out as you'd have it otherwise, everyone will understand... But it does need to have a definitive ending to it.

It's a little scary, as I'm really-and-truly committing to getting it done, but... Count me in!

I am definitely an adult, but I am writing crossover fiction, and I do not at all mind swapping with a college-aged person writing YA. Especially considering my story is set in College (Well, at University, since it's set in Australia, and we do things a smidge differently over here.

In fact, I would love to get the opinion of an American as to whether it 'crosses over' well enough. I definitely want to set it in Australia, but I'd love to know whether that alienates international readers.)

If I manage to finish I would love to be involved. I am a 25 year old college student (this fall is my last semester - so I'm not sure how much free time, but I'm not taking any English this semester, so I'm hoping I won't have any huge reading assignments.)

I'm writing an interpretation of Greek lore (a particular story and group of Erotes) in a modern-fantasy parallel universe. Trying to get the right balance of quirkiness.

I saw this topic early on and it's been running around in the back of my mind. Since there's now a good chance I'll be at least close to finishing/having some conclusion at the end of the month, I'd be willing to join in on the swap! (Is this being coordinated somehow?)

The story itself is I suppose "urban fantasy", with supernatural events taking place in modern day. First person perspective. Occasional geeky references. Probably for an older reader, as the two main characters (recent post-secondary graduates) keep hinting at sex offscreen, even though there's nothing explicit. Yet. Or ever, if I keep the leash tight enough.

Anyone who can't find someone to read for them can PM me. I'll read as long as its NOT horror.
It might take me a bit to get there, but I will. Also, let me know how brutal of feedback you want. If you want a gentle pat on the head PLEASE do not tell me that you want brutal feedback, cuz I'll nitpick every little thing I find if you ask for brutal. I can do gentle, too, though. Just let me know.
