[Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror] Hell Bent

Because I believe I may be some level of insane, I've decided to write a full book series of 12 books (13, counting the prequel) over the course of a year. The prequel is my Camp NaNo project for June. In July, I'll start the official series for JulNo, starting with a novelization of a graphic novel written for Screnzy. Here's a quick, thrown-together summary of the first few books I have planned:

Transformations: Prequel. The story of the lives of siblings Travis and Gemmy Malone, as they go from an abusive childhood at the hands of their father, to a loving home with a mad scientist, where they are eventually mutated. Yeah, it just pretty much covers various events in their lives, going from age 9/10, to 25/26.

Visions: Based on a Screnzy project, and the beginning of Travis' POV arc. Travis and Spencer are planning to get some photos for Spencer and Gemmy's first wedding anniversary. They come across a studio that produces snuff films, and things go downhill for them.

Retribution: Five months after the Visions incident, Spencer is still not completely recovered. To make matters worse, there have been signs of Jesse in his house. So, Travis and his assassin aunt Beast decide it's time to end her.

Obsession: Jesse is still kicking, and decides to go after Travis, herself, with the express intent of utterly breaking him. This one...this one I want to make as disturbing as possible. Last book in Trav's POV. The next set would focus on Spencer, and introduce magic usage into it.

Now, the title Hell Bent, for the series, comes from the city that it takes place in. I'll be updating this thread periodically, if anyone's interested in looking. Character pics and info, along with locations, will be coming up at various points, along with further synopses on other books.

Alright, so, starting this weekend, I'll begin posting character pics (done quickly and relatively roughly)/bios (in the 4 POV characters' own words). I'll start with my 4 viewpoint characters. First off, Travis Malone, and Spencer Abbot...Also, be warned. This is gonna be a big one.

"Hey! My name's Travis. How're things with you? I'm doing good for now. Anyway, see that redhead up there? The one with an epic tail? That'd be me. I was raised with my sister by this abusive jerk of a guy named Walter. We never knew our mom, but her name was Lucy. I wish I could say that Walter wasn't my dad, but he is. Sucks royally, too. He kicked us out when I was thirteen and we moved in with this scientist who I think may be a little on the crazy side. I'm usually really friendly toward people I don't know. After all, I don't know 'em, so why should I hate 'em, right? Also, people say that I talk. A lot. I don't think I talk all that much, though I probably do in comparison to, like, when I was little and dad would slap me for speaking when not spoken to or some bullcrap like that. The matter is that I just like being around people, and like socializing with them. He never let me talk to others, so I'm justified in making up for lost time, right? But, yeah, my sister's name is Gemmy, and the woman that took us in goes by Serena. And I have this really cool knife mom's sister Beast gave me because she couldn't use it anymore 'cause she lost her knife hand. Which sucks, but hey...free knife! Though I'm not sure if a balisong knife is legal in Pennsylvania or not...I don't think it is, but I'm no law expert. I'm not a math or science expert, either. I am good with comics, though, and I work at Hell Bent Comics, in the city of Hell Bent, PA. We have quite a bit of stuff there. But like I said, there're also a lot of labs there and I've been taken to a few of 'em. Not really fun...though the part about getting strapped down isn't TOO bad. Spence says I have a kinky streak that manifests in relatively unhealthy ways. That's just him, though. I'm allergic to bananas, despite being part monkey. But I love chocolate. Seriously. Set a bar of chocolate in front of me and turn your back. I can guarantee that when you turn back to look for it, it'll be gone and I'll be happy. I don't like letting anyone hurt my family or friends, and while I'm mainly against killing, I will if the situation REALLY calls for it. Anyway, I gotta get going to work. Later!"

"Hello. I am Dr. Spencer Abbot. You can call me either Spencer or Dr. Abbot, depending on how formal you would like to get. I am a medical doctor at Hell Bent General, and am therefore mildly disrespected. I tend to get just a tad shy around people. I take my job very seriously. So what if I'm not working on discovering the cure for the common cold? I work at saving lives in the short run as opposed to saying 'Well, maybe this will work out'. I tend to be quiet much of the time, and always enjoy spending time with my wife and her brother. Small children make me just a little bit nervous. My history isn't very complex at all: my parents wanted me to become a doctor, and made me study almost constantly. I enjoy reading, leaning toward science fiction, the occasional medical text, and graphic novels (Travis got me into those in high school). I sometimes feel like the token human amongst the family I have married into, but I know that it can always be worse. Now, because I quite honestly can not find another word to say, I will take my leave. Thank you for reading."

Second character update. This time, Beast Taylor, and Gemini "Gemmy" Malone:

"Hiya. Name's Beast Taylor. Yeah, Beast is my real name, so far as I know. I'm an assassin by trade. It's a great job, too. Pays really well, and you get to travel a lot. And the people I go after are usually absolute scum, so I don't feel all that bad about it. I especially hate those that hurt children. They die in the most painful ways I can come up with. Me and my sister Serena grew up in a lab, and were friends with the Sangre sisters Ivy and Yvette. I work with those two, and Serena's kinda my doctor/mechanic. She's responsible for these arms and legs of mine. They're really sturdy, but they're kinda heavy and would hurt if she didn't alter my skeleton to take the weight. I'd love to be able to adopt some kids, but work keeps me too busy to spend time with them. The closest I've got are my niece and nephew. I love musicals, and not to brag, but I have an awesome singing voice. I'm a mezzo-soprano, to be exact. I doubt they'd take a cyborg catgirl on Broadway, though. At least not yet. Ah, hold up. Got a target bound for the grave. Bye for now!

"Hi, there. My name is Gemini Abbot, formerly Malone. Everybody calls me Gemmy, though. I'm the younger sister to Travis, wife to Spencer, and instructor at the local yoga studio in Hell Bent. I've always been a little on the quiet side, while my brother was more outgoing. I absolutely can not stand conflict, and much prefer meditation to mutilation. I like to try and forget my childhood. My family means everything to me, particularly Travis and my sweet Spencer. I love reading fantasy novels, but have an immense dislike for horror films. They bring back too many bad memories of life with our father. Anyhow, I have to go for now. Peace to all. ^_^

Update, as it's been a while: Got the prequel to this series finished, and am gearing up to start writing the novelization for Visions. Hopefully, there'll be some location sketches to show on here, and a group pic of every protagonist (thus far) from arc 1. It all depends on how things go and how it'd all go with me getting it done and whatnot.

Okay. Managed to get a little over 2K words within the first 2.5 hours. It's going smoothly so far. Thinking I may have gotten the main character's voice down pretty well so far. Key is to avoid too many big words for him...should be fun. ^_^

Only partly done with today's writing, but I'm up to just over 3K. Need to pick up the pace...but I will!

[Edited on 7-2-2012 by Beastfire]

Day 4, and I've just hit 5K. Not planning to stop just yet, though. Also, to anyone reading this, happy July 4th!

[Edited on 7-4-2012 by Beastfire]

Day 7. I've hit 10K, and killed my POV character. Time to bring up the next one and put him through the emotional wringer! XD

[Edited on 7-8-2012 by Beastfire]

15K. Plugging away to at least the halfway point by tonight. I hope.

First excerpt time!

Context: Travis and Spencer have just gotten off of the phone with Serena, who has suggested some photos as a gift for Spencer's first wedding anniversary to Gemmy. The guys have gotten to a studio to discuss it with the guy behind the counter, but Spencer is nervous...

Okay, one of us has to get to the point of why we’re here. And so, I lean over the counter, looking this man right in the face. I put on the nicest smile I can.

“I think what my friend’s trying to ask is if he could get some sexy photos taken of himself for his wife’s anniversary,” I tell him.

Spencer’s even redder now. He’s just giving me some kind of look, like I just opened Pandora’s Box. And then lit it on fire. And then chucked it through someone’s window. I just shrug.

“What?” I ask. “One of us had to say it…”

Yes, it's very short. But others will be posted up here somewhere along the line.

Glad to hear, freeform. ^_^

And got a second excerpt, from the same sequence, with the guys looking for a photography studio. Oh, the ho yay in this one...it hits you over the head, I believe...Also, quite a bit longer than the other one.

Oh, well. We just leave and go for yet another studio. This one’s name is Shutterbugs, and we walk in. Another woman is there. Long dark hair, glasses…and huge bags under her eyes. She doesn’t look too happy with the fact that we’re here, but we are. I decide to take a different approach with trying to get Spencer’s picture taken. I clear my throat and step toward her, smoothing some of my hair back.

“Hey,” I tell her. “How would you like to like to grace your camera with the body of the sexiest man alive?”

…Okay, that feels really weird to say.

“Not interested,” she says flatly.

“I didn’t mean me,” I say. “I mean my friend here…”

I grin and gesture to Spencer. He is blushing again and rubbing the back of his neck. The woman just slaps her forehead and jerks her thumb toward the door, muttering for us to “get out”, over and over and over.

I walk over one more time. I’m about to start begging. She either threatens or promises to call the cops. I’m not sure, because that is when I speed right the hell out of there, Spencer running after me.

Another excerpt. This one's a bit longer. Okay, a lot longer. Also, language here. Just a warning to those offended by it.

We walk down the hall. It’s a dark gray color. Every so often, a door can be seen. Well, okay, a few doors. We’re not sure where any of these doors lead, but it’s a safe bet that it’s not the back office we’re looking for. So, we keep on walking.

Still walking down the hallway, we find a dead end. Okay, so maybe we need to hang a left. We head left, seeing… More of this dark gray, huh? Well, okay… As long as we get to that back office and get everything worked out, we’re good. We get to another corner, this time turning right.

Great. Another hallway. This is starting to give me a headache. Like, not a really, really bad one, but, like…it’s still there, y’know? And it’s still annoying as hell. Oh, well. It doesn’t matter. That back office has to be around here somewhere. I hope.

“Geez,” I growl. “It’s like a friggin’ maze in here.”

I could have sworn this place didn’t look nearly as huge as this from the outside. But now, walking through it, it starts to look like one of those time travelly things that’s bigger on the inside than the outside. I’m just annoyed to a point right now that I can’t remember exactly what the hell it’s called. I just know there’s at least eleven British guys out there on TV with one.

What the hell, building?! Seriously, what the hell is up with all of these fucking hallways?! I can feel myself wanting to haul off and hit someone. But the only someones here are me and Spencer, and I know I don’t want to hit Spence, and why in the hell would I hit myself? I’m not THAT much of a dumbass!

I am getting so. Damn. Close. To losing my patience, here! I don’t like to sound like I’m complaining, but with all these hallways, it’s beginning to get kinda ridiculous, y’know?! I really hope these pics are worth it… I mean, I love my sister, and all, but this seems like a lot of trouble to go through to get something that… Yeah, yeah, we could have just grabbed some kind of camera back home and done these ourselves! So what if it would’ve been really weird for us to do this? It would have gotten done!

But there’s no turning back now. Mainly because we have no idea where we even are. We can’t stay lost in here forever, though. Well, it could still be worse, come to think of it. At least neither one of us is alone and lost in here. Nope, Spencer has been hanging onto my arm for a while now, since we turned our second corner.

Wait a second… I can smell something, now. It’s… I don’t know what it is. But whatever it is, it’s rotting. Like, badly. Like, bad enough where I find myself coughing a little from the smell.

We stop, and I pull my shirt up over my nose, before finally admitting it.

“Okay,” I say. “I think we’re lost. Like, closer-to-their-dumpster-than that-office-lost.”

Spencer nods a little, before grabbing the end of his tie and using it to cover his face as best he can. He looks like he wants to throw up at that rank smell, too. I can’t say that I blame him.

“Yeah, let’s backtrack a bit,” he says.

We turn around to go back the way we came. Maybe if we keep at it, we can find a way out and just go around to the back of the building to find the back office? Hopefully, hopefully.

As we walk down another hallway, I can see that it’s a different one than before. How do I know? There’s a box up ahead of us. I move closer. I have to see what’s in there…

“Hey, you seeing that?” I ask, eyes locked on the box.

I start walking toward it. I can’t help it! It’s like it’s saying: “Come to me, Travis… I need you to open me! Please oh please for the love of God OPEN ME!”

“Trav, what are you doing?” Spencer asks.

And there’s the annoyed sigh again. He’s good at that.

I reach the box and get down on one knee beside it. I look up to Spencer and give him that look that mom and her sister give when they want to guilt you into doing something.

“I just wanna see what’s in here,” I tell him.

“Please, just leave it alone. It’s not your property,” he says.

Damn. Not gonna work on him, I guess. I open my eyes a little wider. I think they’re watering a little bit by this point. All part of the plan…

“But I’m curious,” I say.

“Does the phrase ‘curiosity killed the cat’ mean anything to you?”

I don’t even give him the look again. Nope, this time, I go ahead and open the box anyway. No way in hell am I letting him keep me from seeing what’s in here! I get the box open and turn toward Spencer.

“Yeah, but isn’t the second half of that something along the lines of ‘satisfaction brought it back’?” I ask him.

And with that, I reach into the box and pull out a box of some kind. It’s a DVD case. And a pretty bizarre one, at that. The picture is this woman in just a bra. And she’s tied up, too. Duct tape is used to keep her arms pinned, and I’m guessing it’s on her legs, too. I can relate a little too well to that part.

The part of that that looks REALLY fucked up, though, is that she’s cut in a few places, with blood running from the cuts. Her eyes and mouth are stitched shut, but it looks like she’s been crying. With how much that has to hurt, I can’t say that I blame her. There’s no actor names. There’s just a title. And the title is “Visions of Hell XXXV”.

“Huh. Looks like they make horror movies here, too,” I tell Spencer.

Spencer’s voice has a panicky sound to it as he points to the picture on the DVD case in my hands.

“Wait a moment…” he says. “That looks kind of like that one girl who disappeared a couple months ago.”

I get a better look. There have been Missing posters all over Hell Bent, looking for this one dark haired girl named Monika. But there’s a lot of girls out there with dark hair, so who knows for sure?

“Yeah, you’re right…” I tell Spencer.

I put the DVD back in the box. I really don’t think that whoever owns this place would like knowing that someone looked through his very fucked up porn stash. I close the box, hoping there aren’t any signs of me having opened it up.

“Maybe that’s just a coincidence?” I say after a bit, standing back up to my full height.

“I’m not sure,” says Spencer, rubbing his temples. “But we should probably get the hell out of here. Pronto.”

Okay. There is absolutely no way in hell I am about to argue that plan.

“Agreed,” I tell him.

We turn around and go back the way we came, again. I can see that he wants the same thing I do. To just forget that we found that box. That box and the freaky movies inside of it. Hopefully those are just part of a horror series they have. A very long one. I’m not too sure, though. There is something very off about this place that just gets worse and worse with every second we’re here.

We walk down a hallway, as we have been for I can’t remember quite how long we’ve even been here. I’m no longer as pissed as earlier. I’m just tired out, now. I can tell that Spencer is, too. But we keep going. SOMETHING has to come up soon. It absolutely has to! I mean, every building’s got its limits, right? …Right?

…RIGHT?!

We go down some more of these fucking hallways. I’m ready to go crazy again. To break down. To hit something. Just…these hallways need to stop! And I know it can’t just be my crappy sense of direction, either, because Spencer’s is much better and he hasn’t been able to get us out, either!

We run down another hall, and then another. That second one is the same damn hallway where we found the box. Shit, shit, shit, we’re going around in circles! I don’t know how much more of this I can take! We just keep going through hallways and more hallways and getting nowhere except more and more lost…

At some point, though, we come across that smell again. That horrible, rank, rotten smell. We’re about ready to pass out, already. And that’s just because we’ve been running around here and trying to figure out where we are! The smell really isn’t helping anything.

“Hey, there’s that smell again,” I say, mainly wanting to make sure I haven’t lost my voice from overexposure.

And that’s when Spencer gives me this look. Like he’s getting an idea. Yes! Go, Spence! What’ve you got in mind?!

“Wait!” he says. “Maybe we should follow the smell. Dumpsters are usually outside, right?”

Very right! That’s probably the best plan right now. There’s a reason I like being around him, and that’s because he’s kinda smarter than me. And he’s usually a really nice guy.

“Right!” I reply.

We walk some more. The exit’s so close, now, I can taste it! At least, I hope that’s what I’m tasting. I can’t tell right now. Because that really fucking bad smell’s getting in my mouth, too. Part of me wants to choke on it, but another part keeps telling me to stay strong through the rest of this thing.

Soon enough, we see a door. Spencer seems very excited now, as he points it out to me.

“Maybe that’s the exit!” he says.

Please, please, please, please, PLEASE!

“Hope so,” I tell him, and then I go to open the door.

I put my hand on this doorknob that looks like it was cut like a diamond, but it’s gotta be made of plastic or something like that, y’know? My hand grips the doorknob and I turn it. I pull the door open…

THUD!

Got another excerpt. This one goes between two different POVs, and may be a little long. But I'm happy with it, especially since the latter part of it made me cry.

We keep running until we hit another door. Yes! This has to be it! This has to be the way out!

Spencer tears that door open, this time, and… Another hallway?! It’s darker, though, and smaller. So we know we haven’t been this way just yet. Well, it’s better than nothing! We keep on running, making our way closer and closer to the end.

“I think we’re close!” I say, feeling myself grin as I say it.

“I hope so,” Spencer says, sounding sort of out of breath.

“Well we haven’t been this way, have we?”

“No, I can’t say that it looks familiar!”

Yes, there’s no stopping us now! Spencer is running ahead of me. I don’t try to overtake him, though. It’s best if he gets out first. If either of us gets caught by these freak jobs, he’d be the first to break down, I just know it. I’d be able to make them regret it, I think. I can take more damage than him, anyhow. And there is no way in hell I would ever leave him someplace like this.

We make our way down the hallway. It has to end in a door or something… And with any luck, that door will be the exit. Spencer’s still running ahead of me. I start looking back to make sure we’re not being followed. Okay, so far, so good. We’re almost to the end… I can see what looks like an office door up ahead! Spencer moves faster. Almost there… ALMOST THERE!

And then Spencer trips. From the look of it, he lands on his head. But he starts to work his way to his feet. I stop to keep an eye out for anyone that could be chasing us. I haven’t heard or seen anything, but they could easily catch up.

That’s when I hear a soft whirring sound. I look back to Spencer. He’s still pulling himself up. But there’re two curved blades making their way out of the walls. He doesn’t really even look like he notices them. If those blades get too close, he’ll…

No!

I start running at him. Everything slows down around me. Need to get to him… If I don’t….

No!

I get closer to Spencer, holding my arms out in front of me. By now, he’s back on his feet. Just a little bit more. Those blades are getting closer to him. This has to work. If not…

NO!

My hands reach his shoulder blades, and I shove him ahead of me. I can feel some small cuts forming near my waist, but I don’t care right now. Those will just heal up on their own, anyway. Yes! He’s safe! He’s going to be ok-

I rise to my feet, massaging my aching forehead. It would appear that I’ve discovered a tripwire. And of course, I would have to locate it firsthand, now wouldn’t I? There is also a feeling of mild discomfort in the shoulder blade region, as if someone or something has pushed me.

As I rotate my shoulders a bit, I can see bits of the floor becoming red. I am standing in a puddle of blood, and an ominous feeling washes over me. I don’t hear Travis’ voice asking me if I am at all unharmed. What I do hear is a voice in my head telling me not to turn around. Go straight ahead, but not to look behind me. I turn around anyway.

I can’t see my brother-in-law anywhere at all. What I do see upon turning is a rope. My eyes follow the rope down to a blade not unlike that of a guillotine. And upon following the blade, I can feel my heart stop in my chest momentarily.

Travis is dead.

The blade pulls itself from his midsection, ascending to the ceiling. When it’s gone, I can see Travis’ two separate halves. He’d bled out quickly, from what I can tell. At least he didn’t suffer. His eyes are squeezed shut, his arms held out in front of him. It doesn’t take me long to realize just what has happened here.

I can’t take my eyes off of him. I keep hoping for his bisected body to meld back together. For him to wake up with a few aches and immense soreness at his waist. But I know that his regeneration doesn’t work like that.

I sink to my knees beside him. My eyes are still locked on Travis’ top half. I am partially aware of my own trembling at the moment. How could this happen? Why did it have to happen to us?

My fault. It’s entirely my fault my closest friend is dead. All my fault. All my fault…

I can’t help myself. I can feel myself begin to tear up. No, Spencer… Easy now, Spencer… You can’t let anyone here see you cry. That’s how they’ll know they’ve got you. That’s how they’ll know…

…They’ve won.

I can feel the tears beginning to stream down my face. Travis… Travis wasn’t just a friend. He was family. He was my brother.

He was my hero.

It's been a while since I've updated this. But got another excerpt. Where we switch back to the first POV. It's where Trav revives, but it's before he figures out that he'd actually died earlier.

<…Not your time...>

Huh…?

<…Clerical error, Mr. Malone…>

Clerical error? What?

<He needs you…>

Mom? But aren’t you…

<What are you waiting for?>

I’ve missed you.

<Go back…>

Wait, don’t let go!

<Go back!>

I never got to get to know you, though!

<GO BACK!>

As it stands right now, I’ve got no idea just where in the hell I am. All I know is that I’m wet, cold and I can feel my heartbeat. Wait… shouldn’t I have felt that earlier? Why am I only feeling it now? and just where in the hell am I?!

My eyes snap open. From what I figure, I’m upside-down. And my hands are tied to a rock or something. And I’m underwater…

…Wait a damn minute!

I start pulling at the ropes on my wrists. Need to get out. Need to get out! NEED TO GET OUT!!! Can’t breathe!

I can feel the rope snap in one spot, and begin to fall away. Yes! Just need to get to the surface…

I swim upward, seeing a clear shot to the surface. To fresh air! To safety.

It feels so… weird, to be honest. I’m not even sure what the hell happened. Why the hell is it I just woke up in a lake? I don’t even remember dozing off in the first place…

I get to the surface and suck in some of that sweet, sweet air. I can feel myself getting a little wetter, but from what I can guess, it’s raining. And somehow, it’s the greatest feeling ever right now. like, a refreshing sort of “greatest feeling ever”. It’s kinda like…like…

New life.

Finished the first draft. But this will need quite a bit of editing. There's a LOT of filler. It'll probably wind up being around 35-40K, finished. But I got it to 50K for now! :D

Also, a pic of the major non-antagonistic characters of arc 1. Some show up in book 2, and one in book 3.

From left to right: Nick Taylor (brother to Beast and Serena, FBI agent, introduced in book 3: Obsession), Serena Taylor (Travis and Gemmy's adoptive mother, mad scientist, introduced in book 1: Visions), Travis Malone (main character, comic shop employee, introduced in Visions), Spencer Abbot (main character, doctor, introduced in Visions), Gemmy Abbot (Trav's sister/Spence's wife, yoga instructor, introduced in Visions), Beast Taylor (Serena's twin sister, assassin, introduced in book 2: Retribution), Yvette Sangre (Ivy's twin sister, assassin/witch, introduced in Retribution), and Ivy Sangre (Yvette's twin sister, assassin/telepath, introduced in Retribution)

Anyway, I'll probably update this again at some point when working on books 2 and 3.
