Newbie to the concept of fanfiction

I've noticed since JulNo started all the fanfiction updates by fellow writers. I'm curious to know what fanfiction is, and how a writer accomplishes producing fanfiction without plagiarizing the original author?

Thanks in advance for the enlightenment I'm about to receive!:)

Umm, its like taking a story-world you've really enjoyed reading, and either writing off-the-wall what-if arcs about the main characters. Or taking minor characters and writing arcs about them that fit in with the original. Most people seem to prefer the off-the-wall takes.

Btw, let me just say that I don't write fanfic, mostly because it drives me nuts to mess with the original and I'm bad at fitting in side-arcs. So this is just my observation on some I've read.

Fanfiction is basically what Foodmoon said: it's taking the characters and story-world and doing whatever you wish with them.

Many keep with the canon (original ideas and set up) and like to experiment with what would happen if so-and-so characters got together and what would happen in certain situations. Others like to manipulate some details (like gender-swapping characters or creating an evil twin) and some change up lots of things and make an alternate universe (AU) story.

Fanfiction sites always make sure that they say that the fanfiction is just for fun and that they are making no profit off of writing these stories.

Does that help?
