Writing Soundtrack

What songs inspire you to write and keep you going late at night? If any? What is your listening device of choice? Any good suggestions?

For me it's a lot of musical theater stuff and movie soundtracks, my top five are:

1) Moulin Rouge (This might have to do with my huge crush on Ewan McGregor)
2) Slumdog Millionaire
3) Tron (Daft Punk. Good for late night sessions when you're running low on caffeine)
4) Rent
5) Cars

The AVPM/S soundtrack keeps me happy, but if I'm writing quite a depressing fic then I like something like Evanescence or I have a playlist of my most depressing songs. :)

Depending on he scene I'm writing, I like movie soundtracks! They're absolutely brilliant and epic especially for battle scenes or tense moments.

I like the Merlin soundtrack. Be it's only really good when you're writing fantasy... or something adventury.

Jimmy Eat World always makes me want to write for whatever reason. I think it's because when I was first writing fanfiction all the time, they were the ones I listened to. So every time I hear them I want to write!

:O I never really thought of listening to movie soundtracks though. That sounds so awesome! But I think I'd get too distracted singing along, especially if I was listening to AVPM/S. xD

This is gonna sound really strange, but the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack gets me in the mood for writing. I was listening to it on Halloween which just so happens to be the day before NaNoWriMo... so now every time I listen to it, it reminds me of that pre-NaNo feeling.

As for music for when I'm actually writing... eh, I dunno. I've never really tried listening to movie/tv soundtracks before. They'd probably be quite good, I might try that. I generally just listen to a song that goes with the scene I'm writing. I recently wrote a horror short story, and I listened to My Chemical Romance's 'I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love' album a lot when I was writing that because it was the most horror-y thing I had on my iPod. So, yeah, whatever suits the mood of the story.

Music, huh? I'll listen to whatever I feel suits the mood. I'm trying SoCNoC this year and I've made a synopsis of what I want to do and I have a playlist just for that. Amethystium is good, for me, to get that strange yet empowering feeling across so I'll be listening to that. There's also some love elements so I may also listen to some L'Ame Immortelle. Samsas Traum just sounded really good with what I was doing so I'm listening to some of them and some Angelzoom as well as "Sweet Sacrifice" as performed by the Vitamin String Quartet (the song is originally done by Evanescence) and the String Tribute Players' version of Cradle of Filth's "Nymphetamine (Fix)." All of this music should get me a good story... along with my ideas of course. =)

Hurry June and July!

If it's late at night, I usually like listening to operatic metal, like Epica or Nightwish. They tend to set the mood, as well as keeping me awake and writing.

Oooh, I never thought of listening to soundtracks before...but that probably would help to establish a mood better than regular music! Anyone got some good recommendations for fantasy/science fiction? (any type).

I write fantasy (mostly) and my best soundtrack is always from Yiruma :) my favorite at the moment is When the Love Falls. Howard Shore, Alexander Desplat and Carter Burwell are great composers of movie scores, so listening to them might enhance the muse, too.

Apart from instrumental, the only song with vocals I love listening to when I need my muse is Decode by Paramore.

I listen a lot to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and they give me the right post-apocalyptic feeling. And, it demands precisely as much of your attention as you want to offer.

I listen to instrumental stuff (not necessarily classical, sometimes jazz) and movie soundtracks. Even though it's kind of sad, I find the music from Rent to be very inspirational. haha there are a lot of good messages in those songs.

I used to listen to Hans Zimmer and some of my favorite other composers (Han's did Pirates of the Caribbean, Inception, Kung Fu Panda, The Lion King, Batman Begins/Dark Knight, if you didn't know).

However when I'm writing for a wri mo I tend to listen to this video on loop: The NaNoWriMo Song by italktosnakes

Watch it if you haven't seen it :)

But that way when I'm wanting to stop and I haven't hit my quota for the night that I set for myself, I hear the song playing and think, "I'M GOING TO WRITE A FIRETRUCKING BOOK!!" And that kicks me back into motivation :D

Nightwish is my usual, but I also use soundtracks and specific songs to set the mood.
I do prefer music for scene writing, especially if there is intensity (any emotion) involved, because it just... I don't know - works to put me in that mood, that place.

I prefer to listen to the music either A) my iPod or B) on my actual laptop - both times with headphones. I don't like to share ;) actually it helps me get lost in my own little world.

Just my usual playlist, including everything from soundtracks to Christian rock and Japanese rap. 'Varied' is the word I'd use to describe my playlist (or you could say I just dump everything I have music-wise in there...)

And I could go on forever lol, but it depends on what I'm writing usually.

I'm also a fan of Hans Zimmer, but my favorite movie composer is actually Danny Elfman. Freaking genius, he is. The soundtrack to Big Fish is my forever go-to when I want music and am writing, but can't find something else to use.

I love ALL CAPS [the video for the NaNo song linked above is theirs, lol], too, but they're my zombie writing music only.

When writing, I usually like listening to symphonic/operatic metal, and I'll often put on some new music I haven't yet listened to and just go through the entire album. But when the going gets tough, I like to put on something familiar, like Epica.

And some TV show soundtracks like charmed and Buffy besides wolf mother smashing pumpkins 1979. With many more to help me in the mood for writing or wanting to write and continue to do it for the rest of the day!
