The Reward Plan (Decreasing Word Count Each Day)

During NaNo 2010 I was blessed to run across a post that changed month-long competitions for me. It's a word count plan that rewards you every day by being able to write less words than the day before...ending with having only one word to write on the last day of the challenge.

For instance, for NaNo 2010 I planned 19 writing days. The first day I had a little over 5200 words to complete (no problem on the first day, I was STOKED), then each day I wrote around 300 words less. On day 10, I had about 2600 words, day 15 I had about 1170, and day 19 was 1 word.

For 30 writing days, you start out with 3333 words on day 1, 2643 on day 7, 1838 on day 14, 1034 on day 21, 230 on day 28, and one word on day 30.

If you write more words on any given day than you have allotted then you can subtract that from the next day's allotment or just keep accumulating them until you get to finish early! I never write less words than I'm supposed to, but if I did, I would add the number of words I was short evenly over the remaining days, so as not to overwhelm myself on any one day.

If you are interested U2U me and I will send you both the instructions in a word processing format, and the chart I made to figure out daily numbers for challenges of 15 days all the way up to 30 days. The instructions and the chart are both geared for 50,000 words challenges. I might be able to alter the formula if someone wanted to write more or less words during their challenge time.

:D

LATER ON DOWN IN THE THREAD I'VE LINKED THE FILES SO YOU CAN GET THEM EASILY

P. S. Can I post these on the site?

If there is a way to post these documents in the group somewhere, then everyone would have access without having to contact me directly. Let me know if this is something you are interested in doing.

Sounds like an awesome idea - I'm moving this to the Word Hunt & Survival Tips forum, as I think it may fit better there. :)

I did this during NaNo and ended up writing 70k instead of 50k because I wrote loads at the beginning, and then I found it hard to slow down. xD I didn't really like writing less than 1,000 words a day, so towards the end I was going over the allotted word count. It's a good way to be really motivated at the beginning, because it gives you goals of, like, 3k a day. But when I was getting near the end and it was saying I only needed to write a couple of hundred words, it didn't feel it was enough words to get anything worthwhile written. So I ended up writing more than I needed to. I'm not complaining though!! xD It's a good system.

And, thanks to this system giving me such a high word count, someone I know IRL found me on the NaNo website. She was looking through the people in our region and thought "that person has a high word count. *click* ... hey, I think I know her." the next day she came up to me and said "are you doing NaNoWriMo?" xD It was bizzare, but good because now I actually know someone else IRL who does it, so yeah. ^___^

Update: Going to Try Posting Them Here

I'm going to try posting the documents here as attachments, and I'm going to include a links to Google Docs where I've posted them for public access. That way no one has to worry about giving out their personal email.

Is there a way to provide it in the XLS format?

I'm not familiar with xls. It's in an Open Office format which Microsoft Office products can open. I know I can get Google to convert it to their formats also. What program uses xls?

Um... xls is Excel. Microsoft Excel, recognized by Mac and PC alike as well as Google docs. But ODS is not a universal format. It is Open Office. Those of us who don't have Open Office don't have access to it.

This xls one is perfect.

I'm going to try this out on another Wrimo (where my first days aren't pushed by other tasks like tests and stuff)

One word on the last day sounds fantastic. But how about rearranging it so you only have to write two words: The End. :D

The easiest way to do THAT is subtract a word from the word count of any other day and add it to the last day. Surely some math whiz could come up with something better than that!

My goal is actually not to have ANY words to write on the last day, so I deliberately go over my count each day.
