Modern Day Realistic Fiction

Figure I'd pop on here and say that I am going for a Realistic Fiction story, there are no crazy gerbil ninjas, alien abductions, fire-breathing dragons, or anything like that.

I'm also targeting for current day fiction. So I'll have people who work at office jobs, driving cars, have Twitter accounts, and visit the web from their phones.

I too am writing realistic fiction. Mine's centered around teenagers living out their last days of high school.

Mine is modern-day realistic fiction. But in reality, it's actually fiction where every single detail is derived from nonfiction, real life events. That's what happens when you write a muckraker. Some of the saddest stories you can ever read about are news articles about something that actually did happen. Mine takes hours of research and all real statistics, and occasionally real-life events with different names, and sticks them into one story about changing laws that I hope one day can change the law my MC was trying to change.

That being said, it is modern day fiction. The tragedy, the saddest part about it, is the fact that it's realistic and very true. Very true fiction.

I saw a blank forum and figured it needed a little love. Mine is plausible fiction, I'm sure it could be true in some fashion.

Good to note that there will be some fellow Modern Day Realistic Fiction peoples out there.

So what modern day contrivance do(es) your character(s) employ regularly?

Mine have smartphones and Twitter accounts (the Twitter is a little portion of the story, and a convenient plot poke if needed)

The law and law enforcement treat my characters unfairly. Ask anyone who's ever had to deal with this: it never pleases either side when it comes to serious laws. My MC is a web programmer, and he made my book's version of MySpace though I had to add twists to make sure I didn't just knock it off. My character literally has an IPhone, and at one point he has a monologue in his head about how both Windows and Apple operating systems are so flawed and why neither is very fast and how they both are terrible at error handling and have crappy security without a third party protection software. MC's daughter gets into the Series of Unfortunate Events books. All of my characters live up to be certain figures of real life, and all events, except decisions made by the main family of characters, come from events taken directly from real life.

Oooh! I hadn't anticipated my characters using Twitter (I'm writing modern day too) but I haven't really contemplated technology beyond text messaging. I like that thought. That holds a lot of potential. Not sure what it'll really be yet, but thanks for the idea Rather Be Sledding!!!:):):)

Well, I know my characters will have Facebook since that's the way they message each other for prank set up and such. Other than that, they'll have texting and phones.

I also have a way of introducing my chapters with one of those silly "Word-a-Day" calendars. Although some office prankster keeps adding his own definition(s) to the calendar (it's kind of a running gag and an interesting way to use a fancy word to describe what the chapter is about)

I'm not sure how much Twitter will be used, I have only had a scene or two played out with one of the main characters tweeting his current predicament. "DAPper_Man @GComCo Nomming with the boss, drinks are on him!"

Still in the planning stages, but I think I might have a good engaging story. If the plot bunny stops morphing...

I like that "word a day" calender idea in the beginning of your chapters. Seems like an interesting way to start a chapter.

I just actually might... (and I might tweet writing updates from that account)

I do have an interesting Facebook account that is my own personal "monkey on my back about writing" (WriMonkey) My wife just uses it as a Farmville and other games account.

I got into Twitter after getting a smart phone at the beginning of the year. I wanted to see how that went and allowed me to keep up with a few friends and a keep up with a few things I am interested in (like Twitter "buffs" for my Wednesday night D&D Encounters game).

I'm giving it a go for Realistic Fiction. The Main Character, Mari, is an introverted writer, participating in her first NaNoWriMo (or JulWriMo, depending on weather preference), who lives with a roomate who's never actually home. I came up with this idea November 25th of last year, while doing NaNoWriMo. I'm not sure if I'll be using Twitter exactly but I'm pretty sure my MC will be Facebook adept, email savvy and perhaps BBM comprehensive. I like the idea of the word a day calender...maybe I'll try for something similar

Mine's centered around four characters nearing the end of their high school education in England. A big secret of one of the characters is spilled and all hell breaks loose. It follows the friendship dramas that have actually happened/are still happening between my friends and I :) It should be fun :D

Renbee, I honestly get a lot of ideas when looking into MLIA and FML and I just found this new site called Texts From Last Night. A lot of it's really R rated stuff, but I'm getting so many ideas from the situations on there.

I don't know what you're looking for, but it's a start on those websites. :]

FML is a great source of fun. I also love Failbook as well as Work @ Failblog (given my story is about an office building) as well as "That's My Boss" (gives me a way to make my antagonist a little over the top smarmy)

I should check out Texts from Last Night... I guess it's in line with Dumb Tweets.

Mine is going to be about the lives of seven different people as they prepare for the end of the world. The vast majority of the world is evacuating to colonies located on Mars and the Moon, but some people are staying on Earth for various reasons.
It's set a couple of years in the future, but the main focus is on how the people remaining on Earth live out their lives.

Realistic fiction is almost the only kind of fiction I write. Usually with a present day setting, though some of it takes place in the past. My current project is about a man who decides to become a clown.

I'm glad to see other people are writing realistic fiction.

Mine is about a girl who's just left school and has to spend summer with a long lost aunt. I guess it's literary fiction, where it's based around character development rather than plot, a bit like Catcher in the Rye. It's not set in 2011, but it's set in around 2005, so there aren't really any fancy phones or this Facebook phenomenon in it. This is because the protagonist's alienation is a key theme to the story.
