Cool I've been writing one for quite some time based around the legend I was thinking about starting the prequel this JulNo but we'll see.

Mines more scifi fantasy thriller type I haven't really even thought about a ghost story type thing though I've read quite a few one being The Legend of sleepy hollow

Mine's young adult as well (or maybe a little chicklitish) but it's more of a blend of fantasy and a bit romance :)

One of my ideas is young adult based. I'm thinking that it might work better for even a younger age range. I guess that's what June is for... planning! :)

This may be a stupid question, but what exactly makes something a YA novel? My characters are going to be young adults but it's also going to be fantasy...which genre does that fit in to?

Pretty sure I'll be doing a young adult/autobiographical piece of fiction this year. Huzzah.

Rowena- "Young adult", to me, is like a subgenre. Fantasties, autobiographies, romances - they can be considered young adult if the main audiences are young adults. I think. It's got to do with more of who the book is written for than anything.

Mine is definitely in the young adult genre~

By the way, can anyone tell me what specific genre it would fit into? I'm thinking sci-fi because of the mutated animals, but I'm not really quite sure since that's pretty much the only sci-fi-ish part of the story (though, it is a rather large bit of the story).
Summary: Jake Sharpe hates his twin brother, Chase, with a burning passion. They've despised each other from the moment they fought to escape their mother's womb first. So, when they're trapped with the other highschool graduates of Dravrah Highschool on a mysterious deserted island, it doesn't improve the situation. Not to mention the plane's crew is missing, all plane communication devices are completely destroyed, and the island is stuffed with deadly mutated animals. This definitely wasn't the graduation celebration trip to Spain. This was Devil's Island.

I agree with Ender, definitely sounds like fantasy. But don't get too wrapped up in what niche you fit into. Novels that cross genre lines are all the rage with publishers right now. ;)

My novel is YA as well. I'm aiming for a gritty ghost story. I can't wait to throw myself at it!

I'm a published author of two books...but am using this Julnowrimo to give me a push - a kick in the butt - to quit procrastinating & give me "focus" to get my next book done. I have the first chapter complete...but the goal is to finish it by the end of July (and complete the goal here of 50,000 words). I figured since there is no "prize" to win and nothing that gets submitted with the Julnowrimo, it doesn't matter then if I'm already published or not. This whole thing will hopefully help me meet my goal...kind of like a deadline!

And so, this will be book one in a new series...It's a paranormal thriller, urban fantasy, young adult.

Good luck to all of us!!

I'm also doing a young adult paranormal, with some other genres (humor, romance, etc.) mixed in.

Looks like this is quite the popular genre. :)

I'm definitely going for a YA fantasy/adventure novel. I'm trying to figure out how to balance the seriousness of the storyline and the humor of the characters in a way that would be interesting to a youthful audience :)

I'm writing a YA Fantasy/ pseudo-sci fi story involve a boy, his monster that almost no one else can notice, a girl claims to be half alien and another girl who psychic... or psycho, or both; all who are confined to a brand their new middle school which is being run by a group of space invaders trying to eat the minds and memories of their sleepy little town. I'm really, really, REALLY excited about writing it. I haven't been this excited about writing in... well forever.

YA is basically all I read, so of course I'm writing one haha. My characters are a little on the old side, I think--19 to 20ish and considered full-blown adults in their world. But it will have all the lovely bittersweet coming-of-age stuff. :)

I'm going with a Dystopian YA this year, which will hopefully be fun and interesting to write. I'm also prone toward "older" YA characters, but they're still young adults :)

Mine will be Young Adult Action/Adventure with Fantasy elements. At least, that's what I plan to write. :P

You never know. It might turn into Mystery Romance Western with Comedic and Horror elements. ;)
