Medeival Arranged Marriages....

My MC's father decides to arrange a marriage for him.

1. How would this work in a medieval time setting?

2. Would the older brother have to be married/engaged for this to work?

3. All the other details you can give me :P

What I've read the marriage is arranged from the moment they are born

Marriage for a second son most likely would have been arranged early in life, but you'd want to tie in the "who" and the "why" depending on other circumstances. For instance, what were father's holdings and $$$ looking like before? What does he gain out of this marriage? What did he get out of the first son's marriage? Were they married as children, but only now getting together? Were they married BY PROXY as children?

About question 4: When I hear that a medieval son is not married, I assume he's a member of the clergy. That being said, usually it was the 2nd, 3rd or 4th son, not the first (unless the first was illegitimate in which case he'd join the church and probably be given land as well.)

Hm. That makes sense.

That also makes a lot more outlining for me. *dies* Oh well. I'll just have to do it. Thanks much!
