Word Count

Yeah, I was just wondering when we say "Chapter 1: title," etc etc, does that count towards our word count or just the story itself?:D

LOL. Maybe I'll make my titles long.

I've been known to have ridiculously long titles. Some stupid things I've named chapters:
The one where a bunch of agents get attacked by stock room people down in the Tivoli catacombs
The one where the author adds a bunch of shit to add to her word count
Ich habe Hunger aber ich habe kein Essen zu essen
And once again, we return our attention to the super heroes because we all know that the bookstore scenes are just filler
This chapter is not that interesting, but just read the damn thing anyway

Oh man, it definitely counts. I always have ridiculously long titles as well. And I always add "Chapter 1: " in front for the additional two words!

Some from last year:
Chapter Four: At This Point in Time, I Would Like to Withdraw My Application for Student of the Year
Chapter Thirteen: The Story and Life of the Scary Gundisalvus Who Will Figuratively Eat Your Brains Out
Chapter Seventeen: Jaramiah is Not the Sort of Childhood Friend You Usually Want to Meet Up With
Chapter Eighteen: There is More to Me then Meets the Eye; I'm Like an Onion, with Lots of Unpleasant Layers
Chapter Twenty - Four: Everything Happens All at Once, And Leaves Me Nothing Left but Despair

And there was one time where I had four or five different chapter titles because the contents of the chapter kept changing, but I decided to keep all of the titles for the word count. XD

onecoolc: your chapter titles=EPIC WIN.
And yes, anything you write on the page counts toward your word count. I have "theme songs" I listen to while writing that reflect what's happening in the chapter, and I always write down three or four to get more words. *thumbs up* :D

Ooohhh, I am definitely doing this. Maybe this will help me remember to actually put in chapters, instead of being silly and just having a huge block of text that goes on forever. Sigh....

In my novel for NaNoWriMo in 2008, I gave characters ridiculous names like Coolidge Found In the Refrigerator and Jerome The Spoon. They were hobos, so the names fit and I never shortened their names past their "full" names. To shorten would be an insult, of course.

Whaat? They count. Damn, and I told myself I wasn't going to use any 'cool' (lame) chapter names. Oh well, maybe a next book then.

I need to title my chapters, hah. I didn't do that for NaNoWriMo because I'm pretty terrible at titling anything. But I already titled my novel before writing it and I do want to get better with chapter titles, so I'm going to start doing that now.
And the added word count does help :P

I have my titles as short as possible, but try to hit the point of the chapter.

The titles for JulNovel '10 (I only have written four chapters for now):

One. Intro.
Second. Exceptio confirmat regulam
Third. Shinema
Fourth. Estnisch ist lustig!

I used four different languages - English or Estonian ("intro" means the same in both languages), Latin, Japanese and German. What should I use for the fifth title? French maybe? Or Russian? Any ideas? :D

I never use chapters when I'm writing my rough draft. I get too caught up on my chapter titles and where to break the chapters so I just go with one big block of text until I'm revising. But that's just me :)

I've been giving my chapters epic titles, such as...
3. In Which Lee Acts Like a Suspicious Bastard
4. In Which the Plot Thickens
5. In Which Shit Hits the Fan but Maybe in a Good Way
6. In Which the Group Reunites and the Plot Continues to Thicken
7. In Which People Think About Relationships and Have Their Minds Freak Out in Retaliation
8. In Which Our Protagonists Find Themselves on a Very Boring Train Ride to Sacramento, Dreaming About What Will Happen When They Get There
9. In Which Our Protagonists Try to Find the Old Playground, Some Weird Organization Gets Involved, and the Plot Thickens Once More
(the first two chapters aren't as interesting title-wise)

NaNoWriMo 2009: 21st Century Breakdown (WIN! 50,458 words)
Screnzy '10: Alice's Adventures Underground (lose. 53 pages)
JulNoWriMo '10: Where We Used To Play/All My Love to Long Ago (lose, 22k)
NaNoWriMo '10: Disappear (With Me Here) (win! 52k)
Screnzy '11: FTWWW (lose: 15 pages)
JulNoWriMo '11: Clandestine (Remix 9) (to be seen...)

Last year I did fun titles for my augno which are as follows:

Being an attempt by Genevieve to pass her midterm examination
Being the entrance to the stage of another rabbit
Being an encounter with various vicious villains
Being the subjection of our heroes to the terrors of a poetry recital
Being the appearance of the rest of the cast
Being the reactions of our heroes to being thrown out of an airlock
Being the beginning of a journey
Being several discussions between varying characters
Being the appearance of a ninja, a Wallaboo, and a rabid plot bunny
Being a meeting of protagonists
Being the entrance of several demons
Being a bargaining session
Being the setting of things to rights
Being an additional chapter designed to avoid the bad luck of only having thirteen

For julno this year I'm keeping them simple, but I'm toying with the idea of having a sequel to the aforementioned augno (if I have time to go back through it beforehand) so they'll probably be similar.

(Random: monkey.metcalf13, you did IB too? -high fives-)

Were I in a witty frame of mind, there would be something clever here. Sadly, I am not. I apologize for the inconvenience.
