Underwater Palaces

I'm writing a fantasy variation of The Little Mermaid. Any ideas as to what the underwater palace could be made out of?

Some kind of stone (igneous if near an active volcano) or coral, I'd imagine?

Um ... giant seashells? Isn't there a kind that looks like the top of a spiral-y tower? But coral and stone are good ideas too. Maybe some kind of combo of the different materials? Hope that was helpful, but I doubt it. :P

Seaweed! Hardened one! Or... fish scales, it would look stunning when in the sunlight, as little as it is underwater.
