3 day novel contest

For those looking for the ultimate in Literary challenges, there is the 3 day novel contest. It's expensive ($50 to enter), but there are prizes, including publication for the grand prize winner. The novel must be written in 3 days over Labor Day Weekend. There are no word count rules (for obvious reasons) as long as the length is "novelish" (say over 25,000 words or so). I've done it twice, and finished 40,000 both times. It's rough on your fingers. Not for those of us with Carpal Tunnels, lol.

More info at http://www.3daynovel.com/

Haha the website's not even joking when it calls itself "the most obnoxious literary contest". That sounds insane!

Watch me end up doing it one day.;)

Do you know if there's anything similar that's less costly? (Free would be ideal.)

I like the idea, but I don't like the thought of paying to write.

This sounds like fun, but I wouldn't pay to take part. Plus, being in a different country from where the challenge originates, the dates aren't practical either. This has been the key factor in putting me off in previous years. But maybe I'll attempt something similar on my own this July.

:)

PS: dogboi, I love your signature. I'm currently reading Kafka on the Shore.

You could just pick a 3 day weekend and try it out. No need to enter an official contest. Treat it like your own 3 day novel contest. I know I'm not entering this year, because $50 is a lot of money for me right now (my partner is going back to school, so money will be tight the next few years).

It's not unusual for literary contests to charge an entry fee if there is some kind of award at the end. (For example, Glimmer Train charges like $12 or something to enter their short story contest).

Thanks, and I'm currently reading it as well. I'm almost done. It's my first taste of Haruki Murakami's work. I'll be reading the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle after JulNoWriMo

Heck, I'd join you. I keep meaning to do the contest again, but I just don't have $50, and doing it by myself means I'll never do it. (I'll find a million other things to do). :-)

If there are a few of us interested in trying this, but don't want to take part in the actual event (for whatever reason), then why don't we all unofficially do it together one weekend? Surely it will be easier to attempt the challenge as a group rather than individually.

I'm about a quarter of the way through it. I've read two of his other books before: After Dark and Sputnik Sweetheart; plus I've read the first four chapters of Dance, Dance, Dance, but the slow start put me off. I'll have to try it again sometime. I also have Norwegian Wood sat on the shelf waiting to be read.

I would love to do that, Kristina. I'd love to do the actual event, to be honest, but the $50 fee always makes me not do it. xD

Hogwash. You're a writer, so you're serious enough for official fancy writing contests.

And the title of your book: It is teh awesome.

I've done the 3 Day Novel contest a couple of times since 2006. Always unofficially though, since as a student, I really don't have the money to spend on the application fee.

I actually view it more as an opportunity to pound out that first draft as I feel that most of my stuff needs editing before submitting it anywhere.

I would be interested in a unofficial 3-day novel contest. . . Like so many others I don't have half a hundred sitting around to ditch. My writing isn't good enough for a serious contest anyway.

When are you people thinking? Not in July. . . or maybe the last weekend of July so we can put it in our wordcount? July ends on a Sunday so that would actually work. Fri-Sat-Sun.

OK, awesome! So chat about it in this thread? Or make up another one in. . . say, writer's block? Of course, we wouldn't have to until a week or so before.

I'm not sure I'll do it unless I finish my JulNo really early. For one thing, I most likely will not have 50k left to write; for another, I'm pretty sure I will be so burned out that it won't happen even if the story's there. I finished a novel just one week ago, one I'd been working on for two months; three novels in three months seems a bit insane.

I'll try, but no promises. If anyone is interested in it for August, let me know, because that would probably work a lot better for me.

Yeah, that's what we're planning: something unofficial. 3 people like the idea of doing it as a run on the last three days of JulNo, since the last three days would be Fri-Sat-Sun.

Nitnoi3, SIlverwing, you two in?

I should go announce this on the JulNo overachievers thread.
