Young Adult

For those writing in the young adult genre, talk about your writing here and share ideas with others. :)

Young Adult has always been my choice of genre to write in (usually), and is also what I enjoy reading the most.

Who are your favorite young adult authors?

What will you be writing about this year?

For me, John Green, Chris Crutcher, and Robert Cormier are just a handful of my favorite YA authors. I haven't been reading as much lately, mostly due to lack of time, but I'm always looking for new suggestions of books to read!

My favorite authors are: Suzanne Collins, Tamora Pierce, J.K Rowling, E.E Knight, and others.

I'm not completely sure what I want to write about, but I've narrowed it down to two different plots.

I like Lois Lowry, Bruce Coville, and Roald Dahl. I actually try and stay away from YA writing but many times, my stories scream that. I've got to find out how to keep them adult novels. Perhaps I need to make them more complicated.

I love Malorie Blackman, who wrote Noughts and Crosses.

I am unsure what I'm going to write about, as I have three stories running through my head - one a fantasy set in our world, one about gangs and one about what would happen if we lived in a dictatorship. The first one is the most fully formed story so far, with the most rounded characters

Ermmm favourite YA authors have to be Chris Wooding, J.K Rowling, Hannah Moskowitz, John Green...that's all that's coming off the top of my head right now! Considering that what I write is primarily YA, I don't really read that much of it...but that's ok, because I firmly beleive you should read all over the place outside the genre you write in :)

In terms of story? Mine's about teens with superpowers...which some learn, doesn't automatically make them superheroes. Yeah, comic nerd over here in the corner 8-)

I have lots of favorites: Lurlene McDaniels, Hannah Moskowitz, Scott Westerfeld, Rebecca Stead - way too many to mention.

For JulNoWriMo I think my plot will contain all the middle school/high school transition elements - losing friends, gaining new ones, good crowds, bad crowds, drugs, alcohol, harder classes and everything in between.

I'm also a John Green fanatic. <3

Also have some mad love for Maureen Johnson and Scott Westerfeld. Like a lot of others, but those three are the only ones whose complete collections I actually own. Sad that I have to pick favorites that way, haha.

Hi, I'm Phyre. My JulNo will be YA - but it also falls under some other categories, so I'll be sprinting between this thread and the Fantasy and GLBTQ threads.

I adore John Green - and because someone mentioned it, may I just say that Will Grayson, Will Grayson was epicness? Other favorites include Maureen Johnson (Has anyone read the newest installment of the Scarlett Fever series?), David Levithan, and Julie Anne Peters, though I haven't gotten the chance to read her newest book...

I'm not sure what constitutes a YA story. The story I'll be writing next month will be meant for kids about my age (mid to late teens), so I suppose it would be YA. But it's also a kind of fantasy adventure, taking place half in the real world, half in a place where things imagined by humans really exist.

My favorite authors would be J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordan, but I'm starting to like Anisha Lakhani for her book Schooled :) it's so juicy. I've just read the preface though :x

So, my Julno novel's basically a YA Fantasy with much of romance. It's inspired by Gossip Girl so I use NY elite society as my characters' background :)

Sarah Dessen anyone? :]

I love her stories. Especially her recent one, Along for the Ride!

But my favorite book (not nessasarily my fav author, still pretty awesome though) is Bloom by Elizabeth Scott.

And, of course, I love John Green. XD

My novel's going to be about the last week of high school for seniors. Yay, right.

Oh, I'm back again. I dunno how I'll go. Its winter here (Australia), so winter illnesses are upon us and family commitments are more than ever now.

BUT

I will still try and participate :)

My favourite YA author is L. J. Smith (The Vampire Diaries). I first read LJS's books when I was 13 or 14, so its great to see her get some justice all these years later. My YA novel is more historical based, but uniquely Australian :)

YA seems to be the best place to put mine, though it's going to be stream of consciousness/semi-autobiographical/romance aimed at a high school audience.

John Green is one of my favorite YA authors, though I don't read a lot of recent books... can't think of any other authors off the top of my head.

I'm not good with authors, but I have some favorite YA books: The Book Thief (VERY good), Where the Red Fern Grows, Ella Enchanted, Harry Potter, Uglies, Pendragon, His Dark Materials, Unwind (anyone else read that? It's relatively new and it's pretty good). I've been wanting to read the Mortal Instruments books but apparently someone else who uses my library has decided to steal them all because they've been unavailable for quite some time. :P

My JulNo is definitely YA because...wait for it...it's about young adults. Other than that I don't really know what it's about, so we'll see!

I think my story is YA by default because my MC is in high school for about the first half of the story, but it doesn't deal with the normal YA issues. My FMC is a girl who found a blog on the internet when she was 11 and by age 18 is following it religiously. Then the guy who writes the blog's son shows up as a student at her high school and eventually convinces her to move in with them after she graduates and she basically has to learn to give up her reservations and follow her passion and her dream of being a poet.
