Well, I figured it was about time to make a post in the JulNo forums. :)

This is my second JulNoWriMo and first Historical Fiction novel. If all goes as planned, I'll be writing about an artist's apprentice during the Italian Renaissance. There's not much I know about the plot besides that, but one character is based on Michelangelo, who is my historical crush. Haha.

Research is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, you can get a lot of plot ideas through it. On the other hand, of course, it just takes so much time. I never realized how long it could take to assign your characters with realistic last names.

Hello! I'm thinking about writing a story about knights. Actually two "knights" and a "lady" because it's about three siblings - two brothers and one sister - that have to take over their father's castle when he dies, and a neighbouring noble family and some brigands create a lot of problems for them.

Though yesterday when I took a walk to visit a possible site for their castle, I got the idea that the story could as well be set earlier and be about vikings, because there was an iron-age castle at the site. Thus I could make the story more probable.

What do you think sounds more fun, knights or vikings?

Anyway I'm still thinking more about knights, because they had more stuff like weapons and armor, larger castles, and more luxury and clothes.

Hey!

I'm doing a historical romance type of story so I may pop up here now and again. My story is set in 1860 england covering all-sorts (if I get on with it).

@LeeEyeLa - Nice historical crush XD I always procrastinate with research, since I told my librarian I was going to tackle the WriMo she's made me a whole list of books to read but I'd rather write to be honest...

@acedia - I think you could have more fun with knights although there are less viking type novels. The knights would work really well it you set the atmosphere right and try and abandon the stereotypical castle, moat and maiden association.

That is true. I am writing a multi-genre work (historical/parody) and what I found was that the research gave me so many ideas and things to reference but at the same time, the timeframe can be very inflexible. I set my novel in the Bakumatsu period but could not include the great fire of Edo because of the time frame. They are twenty years apart so my characters cannot be involved in it. Also, there were no great fires for me to credit my characters with starting. So that is a bummer.

So, yeah, research is a two-headed snake.

Hi, everyone!

Wow, it feels so weird to be posting here... Up until just a little while ago, I was a fantasy writer, with a story set in an original world. ~sigh~ My fantasy writer friends will be so ashamed when they find out that I've set my story in the real world...and during the French Revolution to boot! I still have some fantasy elements, but those are quickly leaking out of the story.

Anyways, research. On the French Revolution. O.o It's...hard...to say the least. I've read a bunch on the political atmosphere, but on the lifestyle during the time I've found nothing. So, for my first draft, I'm just winging it, hoping I'll come somewhere close. ~crosses fingers~

Hi all...this is my first attempt at a WriMo, and so far, I've been tossing about an idea on the old American West. The time period is a favorite of mine, and we just recently returned from a trip to Kansas via Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. I'm just hoping that I can actually pull a good story from this great setting... :)

My nove, The Other Side of Forever, is both historical and lesbian romance (of a sort). It takes place in 1886 in earthquake ravaged Charleston, SC (an actual event).

I'm writing an alternate-historical adventure type book. 1890 London (except it's not London... it's called Londyn). It's quite entertaining.

Book One: Enlighten (13,000)
Book Two: Endarken (N/A)
Book Three: Enliven (N/A)
Skyrunner Trilogy :) Started two weeks ago.

Hi everyone, looks like there are a lot of sub genres in this genre! Wow. Some super brains out there I think.

I'm writing a second world war story set in my home town of Perth, Western Australia. Yeah, we have Tim Winton and all but there really aren't that many books set here that people know well! Makes research hard and labourious, but luckily I have wonderful grandparents!

Does anyone else like to immerse themselves in the era, dress up, listen to music, watch films, or is that just me?
