Writer-isms

Well, it's not really something that just happens in July, or November, or any other month. They just happen more often in those crazy writing months.
So what are some of your funny writing flubs or writing stories?

I listen to Baby by Justin Bieber when I'm too crazy after being stuck in my writing and that's bad because I don't like him. If I listen to his song, it indicated I've lost my sanity. My iTunes has counted that I've played it 3 times :/

I started talking about a girl called Zeta and how her friend Karlie went missing and my parents asked if she went to my school. I then realised they didn't even know about my story line, let alone the characters and they were hardly aware I was writing a novel. Faill.

One story I wrote was a thriller about being trapped in an elevator with a prolific serial killer, with blood and psychological trauma in abundance...and I could only write it when listening to Lady Gaga songs. Yeah.

Speaking of Lady Gaga songs...

When I'm heading towards the end of a story, I sometimes set a song on infinite looping and start writing furiously. In last year's Nanowrimo, I listened to Lady Gaga's Bad Romance for several hours straight while I pounded out the last chapters.

sayffolee, I did something simliar. The 2nd novel in my series was inspired by "Fallout" by Alyssa Suede. When I got to the specific scene the song pretty much mirrors, I played it over and over until I got through the scene. Also played it many other times while working on the novel.

(and now that I'm going to rewrite the whole thing, "Fallout" will get played many more times.)

I start talking to myself. Sometimes, I don't even notice it and it's my sister who points that out. And music, of course. I have about thousand songs on my MP3 and I listen to them continually until they are all through and I have to start again. I don't think that a particular song has really inspired me of a novel, but the song 'Poison' from Tarja, inspired me last year of my MC, who was a playboy. :)

Well, I always must pet a cat before I sit down and write.
It's not 'should', it's 'must'.

I found that if I do so, it gives me good luck, and I'm able to concentrate and write.
So everytime before writing, I go find one of my eight cats, and pet it.

They enjoy it, I enjoy it.
Works out fine!

Hm...
When my writing starts going sour, I usually start pacing round the flat.
I get restless and try to do something else. Walking helps me to think.
If walking dont help, then I do some procrasinating and some world building.
I have drawn a map to help me figure out where the mc is.
...I dont really go crazy. I just end up doing something other than my writing to give me
a break.

I sit down, say "I want to write about this", then just write.

I find I spend more time writing at night when I have nothing better to do and procrastinate sleeping. The end result is that I wake up late, tired, sleepy and slightly satisfied that I completed some writing.

I write most at night too cause that's when family hog the TV. >_>

I pick a song and play it on a loop until I'm either dying for a break or until I'm done writing for the moment. Heavy amounts of pretzel sticks and nutella are always consumed while I'm working. If I'm interrupted, I get so cranky that people honestly can't stand to be around me.

During my first WriMo, I had my character hijack the story and left me in a lurch. I paced, bugged my wife, talked to friends, and it was just a momentum killer. It bugged me all night, I turned off the computer, and decided to sleep on it. The following day I bugged more friends and family, and on the ride home from work, I nearly ran some people off the road to quickly jot a note of how to get myself out of that pickle I got put in.

Whenever I get an idea and I'm not in a place where I can write it down (this being almost 80% of the time), I either drill it into my head using whatever strategy I can or tell someone else to remind me later. But because I hold onto my ideas like gold I only feel comfortable telling someone else a meaningless fragment of it that would only make sense to me. Hilarity almost always ensues. Although, I usually don't need them to remind me by the time I actually get to a place where I can write it down. LOL
No wonder why my family worries about me.

(: I often whack on a bit of Iron and Wine, Kasabian or The XX before I tackle some prose. Iron and Wine are currently my favourite, but for more passionate 'angry' scenes Kasabian are rather helpful.

Other mannerisms... I like to sit on the floor when I write. Under desks or beds if I can. I love writing short prose on public transport when I know people are peeking at my words. x) It amuses me, as normally I'm writing /about/ those very people.

I almos NEVER go anywhere without my little Moleskine and a pen. The only exception was this past weekend when I was on a float trip and new that 1) water and paper do not mix and 2) I'd be drinking too much to even think of writing anything down. And strangely enough, I remember my drunken exploits in vivid color, which is good, because there's no "OMG you did such and such" with me saying "huh?"

But I digress....

A small notebook is with me 99% of the time. Even when I sleep (it's on my nightstand.)

It's obvious when I have been attacked by Writer's Block or I'm stuck on a chapter in my book. I tend to talk aloud. No joke. Let's see, at the moment I'm writing a story called Revenge and one of my main character's is just a six year old. Well, um, I started talking aloud to myself. HERE JUST LOOK BELOW:

Me; Could Adrian really use the knife?
Me: (Adrian's voice) Of course, I'm grown.
Me: Sure. 6 years old is grown.
Me: (Adrian's voice) IT IS!!
Me: *shrugs* Whatever...

See?? I have actually had my sister walk in on me while I was talking to an eraser.... :)

I talk to myself when writing. Sometimes I just need to say something out loud to think of a solution to something. If people are around, I'll ask them. I'll summarise in 2 sentences what's going on and then ask a question such as "What would you do in this situation?" or "If A) happened, how would you feel?" and continue writing without waiting for a reply, because by then I usually figured it out already :D

And eating. I don't snack, generally. While writing however, I do...

I'm the kind of person that hates silence, so I've always got SOMETHING playing, whether it's music or the TV. Ironically, my scenes always turn out to have the exact OPPOSITE feeling as whatever I'm listening to. I wrote one of my most depressing scenes with an upbeat song playing in the background. And a sad, quite song produced a funny part. Does anyone else have that problem?

I always have to have music. Lately, my comfort music has been the new Robin Hood soundtrack. I have it playing over and over again. I'm not familiar with the music, so I can't stop for a favorite song ;). I also LOVE writing at night. I get my best ideas then....to stimulate that, I sit in the closet :P

I cannot stand to have music playing when I'm writing, but I need background motion. I keep the TV on, muted, while I'm writing. Sadly, this also requires me being in the living room and I have very, very social roommates....

I don't recall who said it, but I like writing under desks too! That's more of an anxiety thing for me, though -- I like to be in cave-like places when I'm nervous, and I cope with nervousness by writing a lot of the time. So same end result, probably different causes. I also like to be way up high -- lofted beds or bunk beds are awesome writing places.

Weird writerly habit: I can't write when my dogs are in the room. Even if they're sleeping, their mere presence makes me go into PuppyMommy mode and I start having to wonder about who went out when and who might need something to chew on and who might already be chewing on my furniture~~

Attempting to write 400 words per day on 5 different stories.

Of Servitude and Silence: (Tragic Fantasy) 0/10k
Spinner's Inheritance: (Background work for oSaS and Kinsman series) 0/10k

I don't much mind what's going on at the time, but I always have to be alone. I get paranoid about the other people in the room if I'm writing around them (i.e. bugging them, them reading what I'm doing and judging it, them making fun of me, etc) Usually them reading what I'm doing.

Also, I can either use music or silence, but nothing in between. I can't write while someone's talking, to me or otherwise, and the t.v. in the background just kills whatever creativity I might have at the time.

So the other night, I had writer's block something fierce. I decided to walk out and get the mail and bounce my idea off my daughter, since she's reading along as I post the story up. Anyway, it was about one am- I never get the mail until after dark, as it's usually hotter than Hades around here- and telling her that I'd ended a chapter with no idea where to go next. "I'm thinking about the scene with the kitten," I told her, because one of the characters is a kitten that talks to the MC. So we talked about it and I resolved that I would start with the kitten scene. And just when we got that resolved, I tripped over... a kitten. A poor, shivering, half starved tiny kitten. I'm now the proud owner of a female black cat named after my male MC.

One of my MCs is named Shia for some reason (yeah, I adore Shia LaBeouf and that's not an excuse), probably because I wanted to use this name somehow - I'm a name collector to have a set of names in case I can't come up with a proper one.
Anyway, I've been listening to "Transformers 2" soundtracks on loop for two days straight, and I can come up with a good scene including Shia when Linkin Park's "New Divide" or The Fray's "Never Say Never" is playing - and during "Never Say Never" I have this scene of Mikaela crying over Sam's dead body, it makes me cry and then write like hell, producing scenes with Shia that have terribly awesome alliterations because of what I later roflmao, wondering where did I take them.

And Shia's Spanish - I just thought that using a Spanish person in American environment would be different and interesting. I wrote the describing scene of him at the same time Spain scored during yesterday's FIFA 2010 semifinal - I had the game running on the background. Des-ti-ny, I should say.
