I'm writing for a little, basically unheard of, fandom. It's RPS, too, so even less readers, but I love it!

It's Christian Kane (Eliot Spencer from "Leverage", and lead singer of Kane) and Steve Carlson (Lead guitarist from Kane).

SUPERNATURAL! Omg. I really want to go back and watch the first three seasons, since I only got hooked after watching the fourth. It is the perfect combination of drama and humor and creepiness. Love it! XD Sorry.. random; I'm not even in this genre..

A story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because that is how life is - full of surprises.

I'm writing for Yu-Gi-Oh but I'm indulging my inner Doctor Who nerd by doing a fusion (crossover? mash up?) of the two. The Yu-Gi-Oh characters go in the place of the Doctor Who characters and situations as well as whatever my mind comes up with.

Hmmm, I had never thought about doing fan fiction for a WriMo. I LOVE Fan Fiction.Net and spend a lot of time surfing around, and I recently got back into writing fan fiction. It's more of a guilty pleasure though. I definitely think it helps me with my craft, and it's enjoyable, but it has always seemed more of a means to an end to me, since you're dealing with characters that aren't your own.

Has anyone here ever tried to publish fan fiction? Is there a market for that with any of the fandoms?

I'm writing for Stargate: Atlantis (this story is also serving the dual service of fulfilling a square on my h/c bingo card on the dreamwidth community). I've done NaNoWriMo two years, both original novels. This is the first JulNoWriMo I've participated in. Hoping that this will give me the incentive to sit down and actually write.

Alright... I just signed up... a bit late so I'm under by like 3,000 words or what was on the counter :-/
I shall be writing a Harry Potter fanfic (hopefully...) I don't know if I'll end up writing just one, I might have to do two (or more) smaller ones...
This is my first WriMo and I'm excited but kinda scared too!

I'm writing a PPC novel. (Protectors of the Plot Continuum, a web original expanded universe thing.) It's... sort of fanfic. In that we have an original canon and write spin-offs. But the original canon isn't published anywhere other than online and, anyway, agents go into other fanfictions and destroy the bad ones. It's all in good fun.

Sadly, July snuck up on me when I wasn't looking, so I'm frightfully behind. Not only have I not started writing, but I've barely started thinking about writing. Funfun...

It looks like I'm the first for Avatar: The Last Airbender! This is the second fanfic I've ever written and it's a prequel to my first, which I wrote for NaNo last year. This idea crept up on me and I HAD to write it. XD Unfortunately, JulNo also crept up on me, and I haven't thoroughly planned where all it's going to go. Most of my cast are original characters, though I know at least Zuko, Sokka and Jeong-Jeong are going to pop in for the finale.
Once I finish them and polish them up, I hope to put both my fanfics on a myriad of sites, first and foremost AvatarWiki. After all, what's the point of writing this stuff if nobody gets to read and enjoy it?

I write. What's your super power?

Obscure fandom powers GO
I live in Vocaloid-land, and more specifically for this story Black Rock Shooter (the OVA is coming out this month! Super excited > A < )

It's mostly backstory stuff, because I roleplay as the titular character (have been since before the OVA was ever announced) and I adore writing her, really, but she needs some actual fleshed-out story to her life before getting crazy dark magical girl superpowers.
or however the anime makes it work. I really am not even sure, but damn am I impatient. = ^ =

I'm writing original for JulNo, but since I'm incapable of working on one thing at a time...I may or may not be doing a couple of side fanfics. :D Mostly Firefly and Merlin, as those seem to be my fandoms of the moment. I've also got a Doctor Who fic that I will finish, even if it kills me.

There are very limited fandoms in which there is a market for real publication of fanfiction (as opposed to say, FF.net). The thing about fanfiction is that it is generally tolerated by the creators--although not all of them--so long as there is no profit gained. But I know that in Star Trek, for example, there are published anthologies of fanfics.

Short answer to both: yes.

Long answer: not one I'd recommend getting into.

I still lurk in the Twilight fandom, despite not reading or writing anything there for months, and I know a fair few writers over there, and one thing that you'd think would pretty evenly split opinion in this:

http://omnificpublishing.com/

To quote a couple of things from their FAQ

Quote:
Q: What kinds of books does Omnific accept?

A: We are looking for complete novel length manuscripts in the following genres: romance, fantasy, science fiction, urban fantasy, paranormal, chick lit, and erotica. The manuscript should be an original work with original characters, plot and setting.

Q: I have a fanfiction story about Ross and Rachel in Friends. Can I publish it through Omnific?

A: No. We do not publish fanfiction. What you can do is take anything that is your original idea (plot, characterization, etc.) and develop it into a manuscript using original characters that are your own creation.

But, still, it's causing a lot of drama (read: wank) over there. A lot of people are desperately opposed to it. They're transparent fics. Most of us have read all of them. I mean, it's seriously up in the air whether it's even legal or not. But then I've never known another fandom so prone to repetitive, petty wank, especially when it comes to copyright, intellectual property and that sort of thing.

So... yeah. There you go. It does exist, and it's terrifying.

(And, of course, there is the idea that series like Star Trek and Doctor Who and even Sabrina the Teenage Witch that have novels as kind of semi-canon is fanfiction... That's one other way of getting fic published.)

ETA: Wait, need to clarify. I haven't tried to publish fanfic, but I know people who have.
