Erin - 7-6-2008 at 10:55 AM

I know this is really short notice, but I was looking back through my old posts in my writing community on Livejournal and I saw all the posts I had made from my semi-WriDay back in January to kick off WriYe. I did 30,333 in one day and stopped to play Final Fantasy XII for three hours in the middle of it.

But, that was a giant boost to my word count and it was fun sitting in a chat room for like 24 hours with other crazies... and I was wondering if maybe you guys would like to do it with me? I can do it either Tuesday or Saturday of this week...

Any takers?

50k in one day. Even if you don't make it, you'll get a mega word count boost! :D

Rossiter - 7-6-2008 at 10:58 AM

Eh, I don't know. It's not something I'd want to do to a proper story, but if I'm in the mood I might do it with another since I haven't done one since October (got the 50k then though).

lavendrin - 7-6-2008 at 11:10 AM

I'll do it! Saturday is probably the day where I'll have the most time available on the computer, but I can do it Tuesday if it's more comfortable for other people (although I'll have school and all). My poor Muse :D

rebeldork - 7-6-2008 at 11:16 AM

Saturday might just work, although my writing computer is not connected to the internet. Thus, no crazy-fun chatting with you all. Still, I might give it a go :D

FightAgainstSymmetry - 7-6-2008 at 11:50 AM

Oh, this could be fun. I'm in!

purple_ink_pen - 7-6-2008 at 12:43 PM

*Checks under desk for mind altering substances.* I'll be there. After I run to the store for more caffine.

Erin - 7-6-2008 at 03:26 PM

Alright -- so Saturday? :]

dream_weaver - 7-7-2008 at 08:01 AM

*Checks schedule*

No deliveries.
No work.

I might need to be poked occasionally, make sure I'm still awake that day but I'm totally in for Saturday.

Sobriquet - 7-7-2008 at 10:23 AM

I'm in on Saturday. All day. OH YES.

I'll need it too. I'm going away from all things electronic now with a piece of paper and a black pen and I'm planning.

Then, I'll be ready to jump in on Saturday...

Erin - 7-7-2008 at 07:59 PM

:D Excited! :D

What's everyone going to do to prepare for our insane adventure?

dream_weaver - 7-7-2008 at 08:01 PM

Erin - 7-7-2008 at 10:26 PM

ahah. Good plan! I think I'll be doing that a lot on Friday myself. And then again on Sunday.

TheGangsterRaspberry - 7-7-2008 at 10:35 PM

Yeah, it sounds AWESOME but i know from attempting Mad Challenge (10k in 5 hours) that I just can't A; type that fast and B; stay concentrated on my novel for that long. But I'll be writing on Saturday and encourage you with pompoms and imaginary coffee and tea!

JSBulldog89 - 7-7-2008 at 10:47 PM

Saturday is actually my next scheduled day of 0 writing, considering it is my grad party and all. Oh well. Good luck, everyone!

Erin - 7-7-2008 at 10:51 PM

Aw, sorry Robert. Maybe I'll host another next month that will work out in your schedule better?

Have fun with your party nonetheless!

JSBulldog89 - 7-7-2008 at 11:15 PM

Hahaha, maybe, but I don't think I'm insane enough to write that much in one day!

Ikasu - 7-8-2008 at 06:38 AM

I can do it on Saturday :)

dragonrhapsody - 7-8-2008 at 04:18 PM

Oh my god!! I wish I could do it, but the only times I get to write my novel are at work on breaks or after working out when I get home @___@;; I wish I had a day to myself, to spend writing, but I know that I won't for a LONG time.

JodiLee - 7-9-2008 at 12:01 PM

I'm in for Saturday - I need the boost!

Patricia_Wicker - 7-9-2008 at 08:22 PM

I'll be in the chat rooms for a few hours but only for a few hours as most of my writing will be done at home (No Internet). I'll come up for air and food.

I'll report back after 1 pm on Sunday.

noodles - 7-10-2008 at 12:08 AM

I shall totally join in for this! Ahhh! :P

unholy confessions. - 7-10-2008 at 09:13 AM

Hmm...in a way, I would like to have a go at this, 'cause it's just one of those insane writing experiences, but then again, I don't know. I start school soon after that and kind of need to continue to catch up on sleep, which I have lacked a lot lately... x]

I'll have a think about it though...only thing is, I don't know if my story will still actually be going in 50k's time, aha. XD

Rossiter - 7-10-2008 at 01:10 PM

What is the chat going to be? (please not the one on here, I can't use it :/)

I guess I will, heh, but only if I finish before the NASCAR race (at 8pm or something) because every time I've done this it's ending up being during a race, and I'm sick of that.

Advice to anyone who hasn't done this before:
- You can't sleep until you're done. Period.
- Put food and drinks within arm's reach beforehand.
- Go somewhere no can interrupt you, not once, at least for the first 10 hours or so.
- Try to do 3k+/hour for as long as you can, no matter how ahead you are. If you're not ahead at noon you'll probably feel like just dying (at least in my experience :X).

Overall it's much more about willpower than writing - you'll probably write some really good parts and it might be generally coherent, but you're focusing on not-stopping, rather than writing well. I actually view this as much more of the 'mad dash to the finish line/quantity over quality' thing than Nanowrimo. And I wouldn't view this as 'writing as much as I can in one day' - when I do that, I usually top off under 20k. This is a different mentality.

K, now that I've talked myself into doing this, I have to find a plot. Yay.

Erin - 7-11-2008 at 12:18 PM

I can chat in both IRC and on AIM. I'll be in both the IRC chat and the AIM chat [julnobuddies] for wars and general conversations. I can also do MSN and yahoo, but I prefer not to. Let me know if I need to be on either one, though. :] Trillian is a wonderful, wonderful client for WriMo time.

[btw, I'm Erin on IRC and tengo un nombre on AIM.]

Ikasu - 7-11-2008 at 12:32 PM

You can find the chat by going to the top of the page by clicking "Chat Room."

If none of us are there, or none of us are talking, we're all probably in the NaNoWriMo room which you can find by typing "/join #nanowrimo" or if you have your own IRC Client you probably know what to do (although sometimes #nanowrimo does not show up on the channel list)

BattleJesus will be happy to get so much use!

Ikasu - 7-11-2008 at 12:43 PM

Lindt Milk Chocolate (one square for each 1000 words)

Half and Half - (Half Simply Lemonade lemonade, half iced sweetened black tea) I recommend this beverage in summer, it gives the tea a good kind of bite and plenty of sweetness to boot! I actually use sweet tea in mine instead of plain iced tea in mine, I guess it's a Southern thing

Planter's Cashew Halves and Wholes - Since I won't be eating meals, I can eat these lovely babies.

I haven't decided if I'm going to abuse caffeine or something a bit stronger, yet. Ephedra is illegal now :(

Erin - 7-11-2008 at 02:25 PM

Wow... that could end up being a sickeningly disgusting amount of chocolate by the end of the day. Of course, I'm not that big of a chocolate fan, so it could be just my opinion. haha.

My brigade of preparation: a twelve pack of cherry coke zero [which, kill me Sunday if I actually drink the whole thing on Saturday, haha]; cheese-its, and rainbow chocolate chip cookies. I will, however, be stopping for meals because my family will srsly disown me if I don't.

Ikasu - 7-11-2008 at 03:02 PM

50 squares of chocolate comes out to 1 and 2/3 of a bar :D

Ikasu - 7-11-2008 at 08:49 PM

Who is gearing up? WriDay starts for me in about 3 hours :)

Pliny - 7-11-2008 at 08:52 PM

You know what, now that I'm completely blocked and pissed off, I think I'll stay on till midnight and try to participate for a bit. If anything, it'll get me writing again.

purple_ink_pen - 7-11-2008 at 09:21 PM

I'm at 2.5 hours now.

Went to the store and got Wheat Thins, Cashews, Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate Raspberry Squares, Dark Chocolate covered Pomegranate Pieces, Sun Chips, and Mandarine Oranges. Add to that my stockpile of Khaos Energy Drinks, Starbucks Espresso Truffles, Pomegranate Juice, and that good old stand-by coffee, with a variety of flavored creamers. I will lose some time, probably between 8pm-11pm, because I will be in Symbia with the rest of my gaming group. Oh, well. Shot for the moon, and even if you miss you'll land among the stars.

I think our WriDay icon will have stars.

purple_ink_pen - 7-11-2008 at 10:01 PM

Yes, there are stars. There were so many icons for our WriDay, I made an album on MySpace (Shut up, I had to have one for school).

LJ Style Fake Cut

It includes icons for all stages of winning, and I'd be glad to do one for your specific word count. It also includes some icons with no numbers, including one to use during the challenge. (To bad you can't post it on your door. Well, I guess you could...)

Rossiter - 7-11-2008 at 10:08 PM

I'm currently clearing out my closet because that is where I wrote my last wriday novel and I don't want to change something that works. :| Unfortunately the closet got filled with lots of crap between October and now... I still have to find some drinks, maybe these juice/pop things and a water bottle. Caffeine doesn't do anything for me.

I also have to find a plot, but I dreamed up a title and two characters last night so I'm going with that. Maybe it's fate.

Erin - 7-11-2008 at 10:51 PM

Aw, the icons rock! :]

10 minutes 'til start for me! We're in the IRC channel [the chat hosted on this site] and warring at :00, if anyone would like to join in!

Ikasu - 7-11-2008 at 11:29 PM

30 minutes and counting!

purple_ink_pen - 7-12-2008 at 05:06 AM

*BlinkBlink* 3645/50000 I'm going to sleep now. Before I die.

Ikasu - 7-12-2008 at 10:55 AM

Sorry for not keeping hourly updates like I had originally planned D:

It's 11:00 AM for me and after 10 hours of writing/procrastinating and an hour-long nap that I just had to take due to caffeine withdrawal and no nap before I started my wordcount is...

15548. :(

I'm very behind, but I will keep trekking!

Pliny - 7-12-2008 at 11:04 PM

holy crap. alright. 16,886 words for wriday. and i broke 50k, so i'm the man.
and i'm stealing purple's icons! thank you!!!!

Erin - 7-12-2008 at 11:23 PM

I also stole all of the icons that were appropriate for me... missed the 20k by just over 1,000 words. :[

Oh well, it's not like writing 18,739 words in one day is anything to frown at! I haven't finished JulNo quite yet, but WriDay forced me to abandon the novel I was working on that had been holding me back [after hitting 20k on it; you can't say I didn't give it a chance!], finish a short story at just over 10k that I had been working on since Spring of 2007 [started for my creative writing class] and, my favorite part, I went from #65 on the statistics to #5! Yeah, yeah!!

It was a good WriDay, even if the pace Pliny and I took wasn't enough to get us to 50k. We still kicked some hardcore WriDay butt!

purple_ink_pen - 7-12-2008 at 11:37 PM

End WriDay total: 8k/50k

Certainly not the most impressive showing, but between my natural sedate pace and some RL problems, it is a more than comendable effort. I'm sorry, Erin and Pliny, for abandoning you, but somethings are more important than any other commitment.

Anecdotally, for those who didn't spend the wee hours in the chatroom with us, I decided that instead of 50k, I would shoot for the more rational goal of breaking into the top 10 on the rankings (Which I did) and, if I had time, breaking into the top 5. Once that was decided, I wrote down how many words I needed to merit the #5 spot. I wrote that many words, and so am going to make myself a merit badge, despite the fact that the changes in rank caused by WriDay (OMFG, Erin! 60 places? O.O!!!) no longer reflects the victory. A Phyrric victory, perhaps, but a victory none the less.

I will be making another set of icons for those WriDayers who set for hemselves less lofty goals. They will match the ones already in the album linked above. If you want one for your specific word count or goal, or have a particular phrase you would like, I'd be happy to oblige. Just send me a U2U.

Hats off to our winners, and a big round of applause for everyone insane enough to participate! We've earned it!

Ikasu - 7-12-2008 at 11:42 PM

I got to 25024 words on the WriDay project before I became physically ill and had to stop. After a nap I'm not quite ready to write again, but I did get a third of a brand new novel done today!

but now I have 2 unfinished products that came out of this month :/

SillyGoose - 7-13-2008 at 12:40 AM

Great job, everybody! I'm really impressed! I would have liked to have participated (I obviously have some catching up to do), but sadly I didn't find out about it till just now. :( Oh, well. Congrats again!

I've been floating around tenth place or so, and managed to get up to number 3 today, but I wasn't doing WriDay... I just wrote what I felt came next and managed to get just over 4500 words written today.

I had been challenging myself to write at least as much as the person above me, but when I hit that number 3 spot and the two people above me had both hit 50K, I decided it was time to stop. No way I was going to attempt to write 22K in one day.

So, in summary, my entrance into the top 5 didn't have much to do with WriDay :)

purple_ink_pen - 7-14-2008 at 01:06 AM

Word, my peeps. I update the album linked in the post above (Or my sig, if you don't mind a little navigating), and there are new icons for BattleJesus, Personal Goals, and a special one for Ikasu for producing more words than any of the rest of us. Sorry you got sick.

I'm iconing that, too.

sylvrilyn - 7-14-2008 at 08:43 AM

Nice icons....wish I'd done WriDay so I could have one! :P Congrats to everyone who went for the insanity!

dream_weaver - 7-14-2008 at 08:47 AM

Right, since I totally slacked on this Wriday last weekend I'm gunna do my own this weekend. We'll see how it goes. :)

Erin - 7-14-2008 at 09:58 PM

What day, dreamy? I might join in for a half-WriDay or semi-WriDay, if you don't mind.

Pliny - 7-14-2008 at 10:01 PM

There's a full moon madness going on Friday, which'll be similar to WriDay if you wanna join in that.

I don't mind. I'm gunna have to do it Saturday because I work all week and I never have plans Saturday.

Anybody is welcome to join if they wanna but I really need to get going with this story.

I've been doing the procrastination dance to much.

lavendrin - 7-15-2008 at 12:33 PM

Ooh, I'll join this Saturday, too! I missed the other WriDay b/c of Life =/

SillyGoose - 7-15-2008 at 03:56 PM

Yeah, I'm totally in.

lavendrin - 7-15-2008 at 07:15 PM

I think we have enough people to make a seperate topic for this o_O maybe one of the mods could do this for us?

Erin - 7-15-2008 at 08:46 PM

What sort of "different topic" are you looking for?

I'm in on Saturday -- I'm working 14 hours on Friday, so writing that day is definitely out for me. :[

dream_weaver - 7-16-2008 at 06:17 AM

14 hours. No fun. :(

Saturday it is! :D

lavendrin - 7-17-2008 at 06:16 PM

I thought it'd be nice if there was a seperate topic for a seperate WriDay, so more people know about it instead of just the people who look on the last page of the last WriDay. I don't know how forums work, so it may be impossible *shrug*

Rossiter - 7-17-2008 at 06:17 PM

I'll do some wars and stuff on Saturday; not going for a specific goal, though. Maybe I'll try to finish this stupid thing? Hah...

lavendrin - 7-19-2008 at 08:08 AM

What are your goals for this WriDay?

I was going for 20k, but I have a job orientation, so I'm cutting it down to 15k so I won't lose the job XD.

krazikrys13 - 7-19-2008 at 09:01 AM

My goal for today is just to write 5k. Hubby has to work and I REALLY need to do laundry.

dream_weaver - 7-19-2008 at 09:04 AM

My goal is 3-5k.

Erin - 7-19-2008 at 10:19 AM

I'm looking to finish my novel. I think that'll be about 10k more. So I guess I'm going for 10k? Give or take...
