Got Writer's Block? [Dares Thread]

JSBulldog89 - 6-6-2007 at 09:06 PM

Okay, so here's a dare's thread for this upcoming JulNo! I think we had one last year, but I'm not sure. Anyway, what you do is think of a dare for somebody to do and then post it.

You can also say what dares you are attempting to complete. It doesn't matter if somebody else is already doing it--it's just something for fun that gets the mind thinking (and adds words!)

My Dare
I dare somebody to use at least 25 words from the Word Association thread in their JulNo. :P Extra-extra Bonus points for 100+ (I'm sure we'll have that many posts in there by then).

sylvrilyn - 6-10-2007 at 02:32 PM

I totally want to do this one!

And I dare someone to do the same with the Beginnings and Endings thread.

Hey, can I do my own dare, too? XD

Sure, why not? :P

silentgoldeneyes - 6-14-2007 at 10:31 PM

I dare you to...

Have a character paint their house a really random colour (say fluro pink!)
Bonus points for a good reason why!!

-SGE

obi1sgirl - 6-14-2007 at 10:35 PM

I dare ya'll to incorporate Pokemon in your novel. Real, breathing, come-out-of-Pokeballs-to-battle-other-Pokemon Pokemon. XD

[Edited on 6-15-2007 by obi1sgirl]

WaterRatsFan - 6-18-2007 at 11:15 PM

Anvils. For some reason, use anvils in your novel. Don't ask why anvils, but BP if somebody asks something about where all the anvils have gone.

obi1sgirl - 6-19-2007 at 12:27 AM

BP? I've been playing too much Pokemon, as the only thing I can come up with is "Baton Pass". O.o Do we get extra points if the anvils are falling? ;)

WaterRatsFan - 6-19-2007 at 06:45 AM

BP = Bonus points and Double Bonus Points if anvils are falling

sylvrilyn - 6-19-2007 at 12:52 PM

You know what's kind of funny? My novel was already going to have anvils in it. Can't guarantee anyone will have to ask where they've all gone, though. They're pretty docile stationary anvils.

WaterRatsFan - 6-19-2007 at 07:59 PM

LMAO!!! My second muck-up play has anvils...seriously, do NOT ask...it also involves a mattress that won't leave a truck..

Oooh!!!

Dare:

Have a character have a truck that another character has borrowed. Have a random object like a mattress or very big cushion or old table in the truck's back tray [like a ute...that kinda thing]. Have character who lent truck react badly to it and say "The [insert object] that never left my truck" or something similiar.

Bonus Points if they drive around with it

silentgoldeneyes - 6-20-2007 at 12:42 AM

Mm, I like the idea of anvils... hehe

I dare you to include a character undertaking a WriMo of some sort.
OR
Have a character who is obsessed with fake nails. Acrylics, stick-ons, whatever. Bonus point for a good reason why the person is obsessed, or a good reason why they cant wear them!

sylvrilyn - 6-22-2007 at 12:21 PM

I dare you to include a library riot in your novel...bonus points if you involve the anvils with the library somehow.

edgy - 6-24-2007 at 02:02 PM

Giving....ummm oh! This happened to me and my friend on several occasions.....
Have a character talking to another character...then at some point, the connection is cut off and one of the characters keeps talking for a very long time, say an hour or more, to his/herself.

[Edited on 7-4-2007 by edgy]

WaterRatsFan - 6-24-2007 at 11:32 PM

Aww I can't use anvils and libraries in Ancient Greece...unless I go totally nutso!

DarkMarguerite - 6-26-2007 at 11:29 AM

Hmmm I like the idea of a library riot.

GeorgeEliot - 6-26-2007 at 08:20 PM

This is possibly my favorite thread. Definitely, I'm using the library riot.
Ummm. Take a dare, leave a dare... Okay, my dare is to have at least one of your characters do the chicken dance. At least once. And bonus points if this is somehow important to the plot.

Twilight-Sun - 6-27-2007 at 02:37 AM

Can I use the Pokemon dare in a novel about Pokemon? :P

I dare one of your characters to turn into a frog. Bonus points for a reason. More bonus points if the reason doesn't have to do with magic.

edgy - 6-27-2007 at 10:53 AM

I want to do 101 dares! ;)

DARE:
In a very intense action scene, have a character be chased by the villain (by foot) and the the character's shoe fly off.
x2 if the character is hallucinating the villain and running away from nothing
x3 if this isn't a dream
x4 if he/she keeps running with one shoe on for the rest of the story (as in he/she never walks again, but always runs, and never puts on a second shoe nor takes the one shoe off)

Alaria - 6-28-2007 at 01:53 PM

I dare you to...

Have someone make out with a poster or wall scroll of an anime character. Bonus points if someone walks in. Double bonus points if they question the relevance of this character. Triple bonus points if the character goes into a long winded speech about the character and how they fight and/or win the day.

pefergerry - 6-28-2007 at 03:44 PM

I dare you to...

Have someone scream, "Get away from me! You're green, and prickly, and you make my nose hurt!"

Bonus points if the person s/he is yelling at is not green, prickly, or doing anything to her/his nose.

Double bonus points if you include synesthesia.

CelticxConnections - 7-1-2007 at 10:19 AM

I dont know just how useable this is to anyone but...

- Have literal Red Shirts in your story.
--BP if they have an uprising lead by Lieutenant Kleenex and his mottely band of Ensign Expendable, Ensign Anonymous, Ensign Extra, and Ensign Ricky.

banyangirl - 7-1-2007 at 01:39 PM

taking the anime one...that'd be really funny when my MCs are completley loopy from driving for hours and stuck in a t-shirt shop in VA Beach.

EDIT: leaving: Use the phrase "The Internet is for porn" in context and have it mean something to the plot. BP if the speaker is actually looking at porn and gets caught when he says it.

[Edited on 7-1-2007 by banyangirl]

JSC - 7-2-2007 at 04:53 PM

Hmm, I see no dares so far that I can include.
But I'll leave one.

Have a character take their most prized possession around with them everywhere they go.
+ if the character believes that it's magical
++ if the main character told this character that it's magical
+++ if it ends up really being magical at the climax of the story

sylvrilyn - 7-3-2007 at 02:04 PM

I decided to see where I stood so far on using words from the association and beginnings and endings thread. I've used 31 so far from word association and 21 from beginnings and endings, without even trying. A few more if you count other conjugations of verbs and plurals, etc. I think I'll be aiming for 100+ words out of each thread...should push me to be a little more creative. :D

Anyone else want to do this dare with me?

And here's another one:
Have someone peeing on something in order to save the world. This is what happened when I was working on my writing prompt this morning. O.o I thought it was very weird. BP if the character really *is* saving the world, and doesn't just think they are.

edgy - 7-3-2007 at 07:06 PM

I'll be posting my 'daring' progress here:

INCOMPLETE
- Have a character who is obsessed with fake nails. Acrylics, stick-ons, whatever. Bonus point for a good reason why the person is obsessed, or a good reason why they cant wear them!
- Use the phrase "The Internet is for porn" in context and have it mean something to the plot. BP if the speaker is actually looking at porn and gets caught when he says it.

I could probably use that, oddly enough. Not right now, but maybe later. I'll let you know if I do! (And if I did, I would definitely use synethesia just because it's a fun word to say!)

obi1sgirl - 7-10-2007 at 12:43 AM

Another dare:

Have your characters speak out the lyrics to a song. They don't have to be exact, so they can be something like:

It looks like a zombie jamboree!
Taking place in a New York cemetery?
Jeez, it looks like they're zombies from all parts of the island!
Woah, some of them are great calypsonians.
Well, the season is Carnivale; I guess they're getting together in Bacchinal.

("Zombie Jamboree" by Rockapella)

obi1sgirl - 7-11-2007 at 10:20 PM

I dare you to have a scene where someone discovers that 40 cakes have been stolen. Bonus points if someone has the response "that's terrible!"

:D

:D

Double bonus if "the butler did it" and triple if the cat ate them.:D

Dare : Chicken Dance

I can do this, my story is based on a travel documentary, created into a story. At one stage the tour party did the chicken dance on the coach, travelling through Munich in Germany. they had been at a bier fest, and pretty drunk. :D

WaterRatsFan - 7-12-2007 at 07:50 AM

In the middle of:

Library riot with anvils

going to start somewhere: a conversation on anvils

CelticxConnections - 7-12-2007 at 09:15 AM

Taking the 40 cakes dare. Is it alright if the dogs eats them instead of the cat?

Leaving
Have a character sing I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General
BP if the character who sings it is in love with opera and sings other songs (A British Tar, When I was a Lad, La Donna E Mobile)
DBP if the character who sings the Major General's song does not like opera and sung it to keep the opera fan from singing anymore

snapes_angel - 7-12-2007 at 09:29 AM

I suppose that the dogs could work.

sylvrilyn - 7-12-2007 at 04:21 PM

Better if they're really cats disguised as dogs, though. ;)

obi1sgirl - 7-12-2007 at 04:41 PM

Quadruple bonus points on the cake stealing if it's actually Lex Luthor who stole them.

Quintuple if it's a super-intelligent cat, disguised as Lex Luthor, with the cats discuised as dogs on leashes..

Kat - 7-13-2007 at 07:19 PM

dare someone to have a character with a pet worm.
Bonus points if the worm has the initials PBB.
Double bonus points if the character isn't actually a child.

PS, the PBB stands for Psychadelic Banana Bunch. (long story):P

It's in a similar vein, but one novel I woirked on a couple of years ago had L'Adje Manor. L'Adje. of course, for L'Amphetamine du Jour.

Anyone else have a wacky acronym?
